Myburgh launch the M28

Employs German-made CK12 capsule

Myburgh have announced that their long-awaited M28 microphone is now shipping. Said to be the ideal choice for engineers in search of a mic with a sound of its own rather than a remake of a classic design, the new arrival centres around a German-made CK12 capsule, but is said to offer a distinctive sound to your usual C12-inspired designs.

The company say that the new arrival takes the famed CK12 capsule in a different direction. Rather than seeking to recreate the 1960s classic, the M28 features an all-new signal path conceived by Drew Myburgh, Eckehard Dux and Andreas Grosser. It relies on a FET-based amplifier that has a level-dependent response, and remains clean at lower levels before introducing subtle amounts of second-order harmonic content when driven harder. The output stage then uses a custom transformer designed by Pikatron, which differs from the transformer used in the original C12 and contributes to the M28's extended low-frequency response.

The M28 is capable of withstanding SPLs of up to 134dB without its -6dB pad engaged, making it suitable for louder sources such as drums and brass, while its extended low-frequency response is said to help capture more detail when used on the likes of acoustic bass and piano. its versatility is extended by a choice of five polar patterns, which offer hypercardioid and wide cardioid options in addition to the usual omni, cardioid and figure-8 responses.
