Popular compressor plug-in upgraded

Soundevice Digital have just released a new plug-in that builds on the success of their much-loved Royal Compressor. Available via United Plugins, Royal Compressor XT retains the vari-mu-inspired sound of the original, but features a dual-compressor design with left/right, Mid-Side and low/high split modes.

As with the original version, Royal Compressor XT draws its inspiration from vintage British gear. Its two independent compressors each feature their own Trim, Input Control, Model, Recovery, Saturation, Output Attenuator and Dry/Wet parameters, providing users with detailed control over each channel of their signal.

In modes 1 and 2, XT behaves just like the original plug-in. Switching to L/R allows the left and right channels to be compressed separately, while M/S provides independent dynamics control over the Mid and Sides elements of a stereo signal; Low/High then turns the plug-in into a two-band compressor with an adjustable crossover. Each channel can be bypassed independently, and a Solo function is provided for easy auditioning.

Key Features

Dual Vari-mu Compression: Two complete Royal Compressor units in one plug-in. Run them as one classic compressor, or give each unit its own job.

Split Modes: L/R, M/S and Low/High split the signal and send each part to its own unit. The crossover frequency of the Low/High mode is fully adjustable.

Power & Solo Per Unit: Switch off either unit to compress only one part of the signal, and solo each unit to hear exactly what it processes.

Three Models, One Vintage Soul: Models A, B and C recreate three hand-made units, from the cleanest with a 70ms attack to the most colourful with a 17ms attack. Adjustable saturation and stepped Recovery with hold positions complete the sound.

Presets for Every Unit: P1 and P2 preset browsers for each unit, plus global presets. Settings can be loaded between units, so a favourite vocal setting is ready on either channel in seconds.

AGC, Limit & up to 16 Oversampling: Automatic gain control and a limiter on the main output keep the level steady when pushing the levels. Oversampling up to x16 keeps the saturation clean and alias-free.

Compatibility Royal Compressor XT is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or later, and Macs running macOS 10.14 and above. VST, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
