Soundbox-based chamber strings series expanded

Sonora Cinematic have just announced the launch of the second instalment in their Soundbox-based chamber strings library series. Where the first chapter explored subtle internal motion through bowing and dynamics, Movimento Strings Inflections takes things a step further by introducing extended techniques that promise to bring some new textures and fresh colours to users' cinematic strings palettes.

The new arrival captures the same 12-piece ensemble (three first violins, three second violins, three violas, two celli and one bass) as the first chapter, and has been recorded on the same scoring stage, ensuring a consistent sound across the series. There are four extended techniques included, each of which has been designed to add a different kind of movement and colour to sustained notes. Here's a quick look at what's on offer:

Flickering: Long sustained notes where each musician in the section randomly plays a quarter-tone acciaccatura. The result is an unsettled, shimmering texture that feels alive and unpredictable - a ]natural fit for creating tension and unease.

Ricochet Gestures: Long, non-looping articulations in which each player independently introduces a ]ricochet texture - beginning slowly, evolving into a ]scratchy, rhythmic flutter before eventually fading away. The overall effect is organic and unpredictable.

Dynamic: a refined companion to the Dynamic articulation found in Movimento Strings, each player performs independent crescendos and decrescendos, but the shifts are slower and more understated, producing a ]gentle, barely-there undulation that works beautifully in delicate or introspective passages.

Dynamic Flautando: The same independent dynamic movement, now combined with flautando playing. The bow moves closer to the fingerboard, softening the tone and adding an airy, veiled quality to the gradual swell and fade of each player.

Standard vs Professional As with the debut release in the series, the latest instalment is available in two versions:

Standard: Each of the articulations are rendered into a ready-to-play mix that sounds great right out of the box. Users can simply load any of the 13 patches and start writing.

Professional: In addition to its 44 presets, the Pro version adds advanced tools like multiple mic perspectives for each articulation (Decca, Wide, Section Overheads and Close mics) plus an Extra performance pass allowing users to effectively expand the ensemble with six more players while retaining a natural sound. In Soundbox, these signals can be blended using the standard mixer, or morphed using the software's Vector tab, allowing for deep control over the spatial character of the ensemble.

Compatibility Movimento Strings Inflections runs in Audiomodern's free Soundbox software version 1.2 or higher, which is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or later, and Macs running macOS 10.14 and above. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application. It's also available as a standalone App or AUv3 plug-in for iPadOS.
