Story Highlights
Telemetrics heads into IBC 2025 with some big news, not only product but corporate: the company has been acquired by EVS. SVG sat down with Telemetrics VP Michael Cuomo to discuss the deal and what it means to both companies. We also explored the evolution of AI within the robotic-camera and pedestal market.
Can you walk us through the decision to come together with EVS and what it means to the company?
Overall, we're super excited. It has been 52 years since my grandfather started the family-owned business; my father came into the business and helped grow the company, and I've taken over the business for three years or so. I think this slaps a rocket on our backs and changes our trajectory, and I think it's going to help us accelerate all of our roadmaps.
The TeleScope is an industry first, combining a robotic jib with a robotic roving platform.
How?
We're going to be able to leverage the expertise that EVS already has in areas like AI, which is a huge focus for us in terms of our product development. We already use AI in our facial tracking and object tracking and our path planning with our robots. Being able to improve on that is exciting as we're going from a small family to a bigger family. But they're not so large that we're completely lost there, and we can still access their leadership team.
EVS also last week acquired XD Motion. What do you think that means?
XD Motion is very complementary to us: they have a lot of outdoor stuff and tons of stuff in the sports market. We have a lot of mutual customers, but they are involved with a lot of outdoor sports. That will give us an opportunity there as we currently do a lot with indoor sports, like NBA teams.
EVS is a well-established brand in the U.S. How do you think joining EVS will help in Europe and other markets?
Europe has been challenging for us because we're a small team and it's hard to cover the world. We have UK and Europe-based salespeople, but now we'll be part of a much larger team. We are also talking about how our New Jersey facility can be leveraged by EVS as it is a true production facility complete with loading docks and warehousing. It will be a bit of a two-way street.
One of the cool things is, you don't have a situation where there is product overlap. You are 100% additive to the EVS product and technology lineup.
That was important to us. We want to continue our Telemetrics legacy within a larger company. EVS is allowing us to do that.
So, what is your hot technology here at IBC?
It's our robotic jib, which is getting a ton of attention since its debut at NAB. It has flight sensors on it for safety, which ensures it doesn't hit set pieces, other cameras, or, even worse, people. Safety is always important with robotics.
You mentioned AI earlier, and that is one of the buzzy topics in the industry. How are you addressing it?
We use AI today for things like path planning via the control panel, and the rovers are communicating with each other so they don't collide. We want to expand on that with things like presets on the control panel and clustering presets so that the operator can be presented automatically with the next set of preset options for a move [based on] where the robotic pedestal is located. Having more presets will make things even easier for the operator. The goal is to use intelligence to give the user three or five best shots versus a choice of 20.
