Story Highlights
What do you get when you mix College GameDay and the Manningcast with one of the most thrilling events in sports? Golf fans are finding out this week, courtesy of T-Mobile Breakfast at Bethpage. Omaha Productions, PGA of America, ProShop Studios, and T-Mobile have teamed up to produce the pregame altcast show, which debuted this morning just before the Ryder Cup action teed off at Bethpage Black.
Colin Jost (right) hosts Breakfast at Bethpage each morning of the Ryder Cup and is joined by a rotating cast of celebrity co-hosts - including Christopher McDonald (aka Shooter McGavin).
We are taking one of the premier events in golf - or in all of sports, for that matter - and opening the aperture a bit for the casual fan, says Kristen Herlihy, head of marketing, Omaha Productions. It's part pregame show, part altcast, pure fun. The game of golf is having an incredible moment right now, with golf-content creators [becoming more popular] and more [mainstream] athletes getting into golf. We wanted to tap into that.
Hosted by Saturday Night Live's Colin Jost from a custom set at the legendary first tee at Bethpage Black, the show is being produced using 5G-connected cameras running on a private 5G network provided by T-Mobile for Business's Advanced Network Solutions (ANS). Each morning, Jost is joined by a rotating cast of celebrity co-hosts, comedians, golf-loving entertainers, and Ryder Cup personalities, while roaming reporters capture the atmosphere in the grandstands and around the course.
Something Truly Innovative': PGA of America Taps Omaha ProductionsTo pull it off, the PGA of America turned to longtime partner Omaha Productions, which, of course, pioneered the altcast with the launch of Monday Night Football With Peyton & Eli and has continued to blaze the trail for alternative live game presentations ever since.
Despite starting well before the sun rises at 6 a.m. ET on Friday and Saturday, the Breakfast at Bethpage' show hosted by Colin Jost draws a raucous crowd each morning.
PGA of America knew that they wanted to do something truly innovative for the Ryder Cup, says Herlihy, something that would bring the unmatched onsite experience to the fans at home. We pitched them this idea of combining [ESPN] College GameDay and the ManningCast: let's take those formats and create something that golf hasn't done before - especially not on a stage this big.
The two-hour show (6-8 a.m. ET on Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-noon on Sunday) will emanate from two locations, starting with a set just behind the first tee near the Bethpage Black clubhouse. Jost and company will then move to a second set below the first tee near Wednesday's Opening Ceremony location.
That second hour is going to [feature] a lot of picture-in-picture, with our talent in boxes talking over the live feeds that our cameras will be capturing from around the course, says Herlihy. We want to it to be as casual and unscripted as possible, similar to what Peyton and Eli do [on Monday Night Football]. You're tuning into our show to have fun, so we want to present exactly that kind of show.
The Technology Behind It All: NEP Specialty Capture and T-Mobile's 5G NetworkNEP has rolled out its dual-unit TS2 truck to serve Omaha Productions, which has its full production team onsite for the Breakfast show.

Among each day's highlights will be the raucous crowd making a mad dash to the first-tee box as the gates open each morning. T-Mobile has teamed with NEP Specialty Capture to deploy multiple 5G-connected cameras to capture this one-of-a-kind scene, including a wireless Steadicam, drone, and a T-Mobile-branded hat cam worn by a spectator on hand at Bethpage Black.
T-Mobile has provided us with that dedicated 5G network specifically for this broadcast, which allows us to be really nimble and in-the-moment, says Herlihy. We can go anywhere within that footprint to capture some interesting and fun moments.

Beyond the Live Show: Creating Social-First MomentsThe show already has a solid lineup of guests booked across the three days, she says, noting that her team will be opportunistic as they see various celebrities and golf personalities in attendance. Although the live broadcast is key, she adds, the Omaha Productions team will also be extremely aggressive in creating unique content for social media.
Kristen Herlihy shows Breakfast at Bethpage guest Christopher McDonald social media content, which is a major focus for Omaha Production at the Ryder Cup.
I think the ephemeral live show is certainly huge, Herlihy says. We want to execute to perfection, but we're also producing this show specifically for social-media moments. We'll be clipping the best entertainment-centric moments from the show and sharing across social channels in hopes of reaching more of a casual fan.
Founded just five years ago, Omaha Productions has quickly grown into one of the most influential production houses in all of sports media. Herlihy sees the Breakfast at Bethpage production as the epitome of that exponential growth.
When we started five years ago, we were such a small company. We are now
