Story Highlights
Blackmagic Design had some fortuitous timing at IBC this year as its hottest product, the Blackmagic Design ProDock is ideal for taking the use of the new iPhone 17 to the next level. Blackmagic Design's Director, Sales Operations, North America, Bob Caniglia, discussed what it means to iPhone users around the globe.

What are some of the top highlights here at IBC for Blackmagic?
There are a couple of things. First, we announced the support for ProRes Raw in Resolve, as well as our pocket cinema, 4K camera 4K, and Video Assist. That ProRes Raw support is something that people have been asking about for a long time; now we have that support. Also new is our Camera Pro Dock that can plug into the new Apple iPhone 17, which Apple says now supports ProRes Raw. That means the user can plug the Dock into the iPhone and have a breakout, with timecode and genlock making it possible to use the iPhone in a professional environment. With ports on the back of the Dock, the video can be recorded to an SSD drive, or the files can also be sent through Black Magic Cloud to editors and others.
Genlock is a great addition for iPhone users.
Yes. You can do multicam with the iPhones and other cameras all in sync. And, with the Black Magic camera app, you can monitor them on an iPad and see the multiple sources. The Dock also has an HDMI output as well as a microphone input and a headphone jack, all the kinds of things that will make the iPhone a little more usable. And new capabilities of the iPhone, like an auto sensor to shoot a two shot if there are two people involved, make the process event quicker and easier for one person to use.
For sports needs, it seems like a great option for a coach's press conference or adding in an iPhone as a second or third shot for an interview.
Exactly. We already see photographers, once they have the big camera set up, using the iPhone to get another angle and then send that via Black Magic cloud back to the station. But giving them more professional tools with the inputs and outputs and things like that gives them another option for reporting with an iPhone. And, when it's coupled with the camera app, which has a lot of controls for the iPhone, it rounds things out.
When will the Dock ship?
We'll be ready to start shipping them when Apple starts shipping the phones. It will be available through the Apple store as well as our traditional retailers.
A key theme we are asking everyone about here at IBC is AI and generative AI. How do you see those two technology areas impacting Blackmagic?
The good uses of AI are tools that perform menial tasks and are more assistive, allowing the user to be more creative by fixing things that might take a lot of time. And it's a bit like when nonlinear editing came out and people said they would be editing more quickly. Instead, it allowed [more creativity] because, in the linear world, you would settle for the first cut because there wasn't time to make it better. With nonlinear, you could do 10 recuts. In the editing world, we have a lot of AI tools for things like rotoscoping, which used to take a lot of time. Of course, there are audio-transcription tools or ways to blend voiceovers to make them sound like they were recorded in the same room. Those are things you could do manually, but, without AI, it will just take a lot longer.
