Netflix will introduce a diverse slate of 9 titles at the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Celebrating its 30th anniversary, BIFF will present a special lineup of Korean and global shows, along with the hottest new Netflix titles by world-renowned auteurs.
Good News
Set in the 1970s, Good News follows a group of people determined to land a hijacked plane at any cost, hatching a suspicious plan along the way. Officially invited to the Special Presentations section of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and generating strong buzz, the film is now highly anticipated as the first Korean film in seven years to be invited to the Gala Presentation section at BIFF. In this film, Director Byun Sung-hyun teams up once again with Netflix, following Kill Boksoon. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast led by Sul Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung, and Ryoo Seung-bum, Good News will take you aboard a hijacked plane on a thrilling, twist-laden journey packed with suspense, high-stakes conflict, and unexpected turns.
The Great Flood
Invited to Korean Cinema Today - Special Premiere,' The Great Flood is a sci-fi disaster film set in a flooded apartment building that portrays humanity's desperate fight for survival on the last day of Earth. Amid the devastation and relentless tension of the disaster, Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo will captivate audiences with gripping performances that heighten the film's emotional impact.
As You Stood By
Netflix's Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese titles have been invited to BIFF's On Screen section. As You Stood By is a series that will thrust viewers into the harrowing tale of two women who, facing a dire life-or-death dilemma, make the fateful choice to kill - and are swept into a chain of unforeseen consequences. Directed by Lee Jeong-lim and featuring Jeon So-nee, Lee You-mi, Jang Seung-jo, and Lee Mu-saeng, the show captures the friendship and bond between two women as they strive to escape violence and a hellish reality through their suspenseful journey.
Romantics Anonymous
Last Samurai Standing
The Japanese series Romantics Anonymous tells the story of a man who can't be touched and a woman who can't meet anyone's eyes, as they slowly open their hearts to one another through chocolate. Director Sho Tsukikawa (I Want to Eat Your Pancreas) is at the helm, while Shun Oguri and Han Hyo-joo come together to deliver a tender, heart-fluttering romance that only two masters of melodrama could bring to life.
The series Last Samurai Standing unfolds a deadly game set in 1878 Japan, where 292 samurais are forced to fight to death until only one remains to claim the cash prize. Featuring top Japanese actors including Junichi Okada and Yumia Fujisaki, the show promises a fierce and ferocious battle.
The Resurrected
The Resurrected is a Taiwanese series that follows two desperate mothers who bring back to life a deceased ringleader of a fraud scheme to avenge their kidnapped daughters. Co-directed by Leste Chen and Hsu Chao-jen, the series features renowned Asian stars Shu Qi and Sinje Lee, who join forces to bring this intense and compelling story to life.
Frankenstein
BIFF adds an extra layer of excitement this year by officially inviting Netflix U.S. titles from globally acclaimed auteurs.
JAY KELLY, the new film from Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach, follows famous movie actor, Jay Kelly (George Clooney), as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, confronting both his past and present, accompanied by his devoted manager Ron (Adam Sandler). Poignant and humor-filled, epic and intimate, JAY KELLY is pitched at the intersection of life's regrets and notable glories.
Another keenly anticipated film is Frankenstein. Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
In A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, starting a race to determine who is responsible and how to respond. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE unfolds as a riveting, dramatic thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
In collaboration with BIFF, Netflix will once again bring together top creative talent for the second annual Creative Asia on September 20. Designed for emerging filmmakers, creatives, and production professionals, this year's Creative Asia features an expanded program that includes a series of Creator Masterclasses, offering a unique opportunity to learn from established creators Netflix partners with, and a Deep Dive Training Session co-hosted with the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA).
A diverse international lineup of Netflix shows - Good News, As You Stood By, The Great Flood, Romantics Anonymous, Last Samurai Standing, The Resurrected, Jay Kelly, Frankenstein, and A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE - awaits at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, which takes place over ten days from September 17 to 26 at the Busan Cinema Center and nearby venues.
