It's been ten years since Netflix first arrived in Italy.
On the occasion of the press conference held at the Italian Ministry of Culture, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced a one-of-a-kind partnership for the Italian creative sector with Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Europe's oldest film school, to be inaugurated with the reopening of the historic Cinema Europa in Rome. Alongside Ted Sarandos at the conference - which opened with a video address from the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli - was Gabriella Buontempo, President of the Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.
Netflix will contribute to the renovation and operating costs of the cinema. We will also collaborate with Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia on a variety of cultural and educational initiatives and projects, which will call Cinema Europa home. In addition, Netflix will use the space to host its own initiatives and special events.
During the conference, Sarandos looked back on Netflix's decade in the country. Since 2015, Netflix has released over 1,000 Italian titles. These original series and movies were filmed in more than 100 cities across the country, from Turin to Bari, from Chioggia to Palermo. From 2021 to 2024, Netflix has contributed over 1.1B to the Italian economy, collaborating with over 30 production companies and supporting over 5,500 cast and crew jobs.
Ted Sarandos' remarks:
Good morning, everyone.
I'm thrilled to join you all today.
Thank you all for being here - and a special thank you to the Ministry of Culture for hosting us and to Minister Giuli for the support.
Coming to Italy is always a joy, but this visit is especially meaningful because this year marks Netflix's 10th anniversary in Italy.
In just a decade, we have gone on an incredible adventure. We have worked with some of the best Italian storytellers, producers and creative talent to bring local series and films to our members here in Italy and around the world. More than 1,000 Italian titles since 2015.
These stories have come from every corner of the country.
our very first Italian series, Suburra, shot on the streets of Rome;
the magic of Naples in The Hand of God;
the majesty of Turin in The Law According to Lidia Po t;
and the unforgettable Sicilian landscapes of The Leopard.
Our productions have spanned over 100 cities and towns, reflecting the rich tapestry of Italy's regions - and we still haven't run out of beautiful places to film! Our commitment has been to showcase every facet of Italy - the unrivaled cultural heritage, vibrant landscapes, mouthwatering food and, of course, the warmth and passion of the Italian people.
This journey's impact is tangible. Over the past four years, we've supported more than 5,500 jobs in the Italian audiovisual sector. Our investments from 2021 to 2024 have contributed more than 1.1 billion to Italy's economy.
But after ten fantastic years, we're excited to deepen our commitment still further. It's a great joy for us to enter a one-of-a-kind partnership with CSC - and support the reopening of the iconic Cinema Europa here in Rome.
This is more than a restoration project. It's a collaboration with one of the world's most prestigious film schools and custodians of Italian cinema heritage. And its a testament to our shared commitment to the art and craft of filmmaking.
Cinema Europa is woven into the creative fabric of Italy - built on the site of the first open-air screening of an Italian film, exactly 120 years ago. Bringing it back to life is to endow the creative community with a place to meet, share ideas and celebrate storytelling. This renewed space will honour the classics, welcome today's bold voices and stories, and nurture the next generation of filmmakers. Together, we'll ensure the magic of Italian storytelling continues to captivate audiences here and around the world for generations to come.
Thank you.
Sarandos had the honor of looking back on Netflix's ten years in Italy with President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, during a meeting at Quirinale.
The co-CEO also met representatives from institutions and the audiovisual industry, partners, members of the press and talent to mark this milestone at a celebratory event. During the event, Tinny Andreatta, Vice President for Italian content, thanked the guests from the stage and showed them a taped love letter to Italy, which Ted Sarandos echoed in his brief final speech.
