Berlin, March 21, 2023 - Netflix is being honored with Germanys prestigious Grimme-Preis this year for no fewer than two outstanding titles: the series KLEO as a brightly colorful adventure brimming with exaggerations and the successful makeover of the makeover genre , QUEER EYE GERMANY. The award ceremony will take place on April 21 in Marl, Germany.
Comrade, vamp, functionarys wife, nurse, party girl - now you can add critics' and industry darling to the list: KLEO wins the coveted award in the Fiction category of this years Grimme-Preis. It is extremely rare for German fiction to be so refreshing, so cheeky, and so politically incorrect at the same time, reads the jurys statement. The way the betrayed Stasi assassin savagely roams with style, dishing out lethal revenge after the collapse of the GDR and finishing off her old HVA hierarchy all the way up to Mielke, is a pure delight because it so masterfully interweaves violence and humor, killing and comedy, as if by the hands of well-established US genre mavens.
KLEO was produced under the aegis of the showrunner and writer team HaRiBo (Para - We Are King, 4 Blocks), consisting of Hanno Hackfort, Richard Kropf and Bob Konrad, as well as Executive Producers Michael Souvignier and Till Derenbach of Zeitsprung Pictures. The series starring Jella Haase in the lead role along with Dimitrij Schaad as her antagonist/partner-in-crime was a smash hit during the summer of 2022 - not just in Germany, but internationally.
Another breath of fresh air for the German TV landscape in 2022 - with all colors of the rainbow and plenty of good vibes - came in the form of QUEER EYE GERMANY, the first international export of the US hit reality format Queer Eye, which was produced by ITV Studios Germany for Netflix. The Grimme jury noted just how fabulous the show centered around the Fab 5 - consisting of work/life coach Leni Bolt, fashion virtuoso Jan-Henrik Scheper-Stuke, beauty guru Avi Jakobs, nutrition and health expert Aljosha Muttardi and design ace Ayan Yuruk - is and awarded the reality series in the Entertainment category. The jurys statement concludes: No sensationalism, no know-it-all attitude, and above all: no cynicism. ( ) thanks to an outstanding cast, the sensitive and moving approach [succeeds]. Thus, it doesnt just accomplish the lossless translation of American entertainment into German - in itself a royal discipline; in fact, even the occasional misanthropic component has been replaced by a heartwarming or meaningful one, which is a significant enhancement of the format. Theres no turning up your nose.
Over the course of five episodes, the Fab 5 of QUEER EYE GERMANY pave the way for new perspectives, helping their mentees rekindle the love for life - and convincing the Grimme jury in the process.
Netflix won its first Grimme-Preis with its first German original, DARK, in 2018. Since then, the streaming provider has garnered five more Grimme awards - for How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) and Skylines in 2020, Unorthodox in 2021 and now Kleo and Queer Eye Germany in 2023. Additionally, five titles have been nominated for a Grimme-Preis - We Are the Wave in 2020, The Last Word and A Perfect Crime in 2021 as well as 1899 and Gladbeck: The Hostage Crisis in 2023.

About KLEO
1987: Top East-German spy Kleo kills a businessman in West Berlin while on a mission with a secret Stasi commando. Not long after, she's arrested by the Stasi on spurious claims and denounced by everyone she knows, even her own grandfather. After two years in jail, the Berlin Wall falls, and Kleo is suddenly free. She soon finds out that the conspiracy against her is much bigger than she could have imagined, and an ominous red suitcase seems to be the missing puzzle piece. Kleo sets off on a crusade for revenge, on a hunt that leads her through anarchistic Berlin, improvised electro clubs and Mallorcan fincas, and finally into the Atacama Desert. All the while, she's followed by West-Berlin police officer Sven, who sees the case of his life unfolding before him.
