Boston Conservatory at Berklee's spring Center Stage season continues with a production of the acclaimed electropop opera Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 at the Nancy & Edward Roberts Studio Theatre at the Calderwood Pavilion. Evening performances will take place from Wednesday, April 9 through Sunday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.; matinees will take place on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m.
Composer Dave Malloy's story is based on a segment of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel War and Peace, beginning when Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fianc from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation.
The hit musical expands the possibilities for the genre with its daring score and bold storytelling. During its 2016-2017 run at Broadway's Imperial Theatre, Boston Conservatory at Berklee alum Shoba Narayan (BFA 12, musical theater) made her Broadway debut as Natasha, after serving as an understudy for the role. In doing so, Narayan became the first South Asian female in a principal role in over a decade. The show was nominated across 12 categories during the 2017 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score; it received two Tonys for scenic and lighting design, respectively.
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 is a vibrant and beautiful musical, emblematic of the way that theater can push new boundaries and engage the imagination, said Krisha Marcano, dean of theater for Boston Conservatory at Berklee. This musical is particularly special to the Conservatory community due to 2012 musical theater alum Shoba Narayan's groundbreaking role in the original company. Our students will put on an incredible production at the beloved Calderwood Pavilion.
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 will take place at the Nancy & Edward Roberts Studio Theatre at the Calderwood Pavilion located at 527 Tremont Street in Boston, Massachusetts, at 7:30 p.m. from Wednesday, April 9 through Sunday, April 13; matinees will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13. Tickets are $40. View additional events in Boston Conservatory's Center Stage season.
