Story Highlights
WireCam is making its way around FanDuel Sports Network's MLB productions this season, enhancing game presentations with unique looks for viewers. The WireCam system has wrapped up its residence at Great American Ballpark for FanDuel Sports Network Ohio broadcasts of Cincinnati Reds games and is headed to American Family Field, where it will serve FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin's Milwaukee Brewers broadcasts until mid June.
The WireCam is designed to be controlled by a single operator.
We are very happy to have WireCam in position to enhance games with a number of our teams thus far, says Ed Placey, executive producer, MLB, FanDuel Sports Network. We're just finishing up a couple of homestands in Cincinnati, then off to Milwaukee.
FanDuel Sports Network Gets in the WireCam Game Future decisions on where WireCam will be installed have been made based on interest from the teams themselves as well as whether locations allow productive use. Moving forward, we'll be keeping an eye on how pennant races are shaping up as well, he says, noting that his hope is for WireCam to visit first-place Detroit as soon as possible. It has been good exposing our directors to more of these opportunities to enhance their shows with a unique tool that is starting to turn heads in baseball.
FanDuel Sports Network aims to give fans unique looks with its WireCam.
FanDuel Sports Network sees added value whenever two of its teams are playing each other because both home and away telecasts get the benefit of WireCam. That has been a factor in decision-making as well, Placey adds. Expanding our production capabilities continues to be at the forefront of our mission to deliver a new standard for teams and their hometown fans.
WireCam Continues To Grow Regional Footprint WireCam was implemented for FanDuel Sports Network's broadcasts of Cincinnati Reds games.
WireCam has become a staple of many regional MLB broadcasts across the country, with some production teams calling it a game-changer for their broadcasts. ROOT Sports was the first RSN to implement DEFY's cabled aerial system (which the vendor calls Dactylcam), deploying it for Seattle Mariners broadcasts in 2020. Heading into this season, more than a dozen teams had installed the systems at their respective ballparks, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Baltimore Orioles, and Toronto Blue Jays.
Ballparks typically have the system installed along the third-base line, where it can capture the crowd's energy as players round third and head to home. To install the system, DEFY scouts the venue and submits a design to the stadium for approval. DEFY can install the system, which is waterproof and built specifically for baseball, in a matter of hours using identical equipment for all installations (making it easier to maintain).
The system's controls are intuitive, minimizing cost and making it easier for the single operator to direct the camera. The operator sits in a seat and drives via two pedals: one for the left foot, one for the right. As with a gas pedal, the harder a pedal is pushed, the faster the camera moves. The operator's hands are free to control the pan, tilt, zoom, and focus.
