Story Highlights
ESPN's production of the 2025 NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS), held at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, represents the network's most technologically ambitious softball presentation to date.
With a significantly expanded camera complement, immersive POV integrations, and aerial coverage tools, ESPN is once again raising the bar for collegiate championship production.

Every game of the tournament-running May 29 through June 6-is being carried live across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU, with full streaming support on ESPN+. But for ESPN's production team, the bigger story is what's behind the cameras.
Expanded Camera Complement: Technocrane, Rail Cam, and Dual-Point Cable System Debut The 2025 WCWS broadcast introduces several new elements to ESPN's already robust camera arsenal.
New this year is the addition of a Technocrane, positioned on the baseline to provide sweeping cinematic motion shots of gameplay and crowd reactions. The extended reach and dynamic movement of the crane give directors the ability to capture unique low and high-angle perspectives, enhancing both storytelling and visual depth.
Another first-time deployment is a two-point cable camera system that stretches from the top of the press box down the left-field line. This system provides dramatic tracking shots of base runners rounding third base and heading for home-an angle not previously available in WCWS coverage.
To better cover defensive play in the outfield, ESPN has installed an 80-foot rail camera system along the left and centerfield wall. This mobile camera tracks fly balls, catches, and relays with dynamic motion that follows the play in real time, adding another layer of coverage to outfield action.
Returning to the production this year is the Megalodon shallow-depth-of-field camera, offering cinematic, high-frame-rate visuals ideal for capturing emotional moments, celebrations, and dramatic close-ups. Often used in NFL and College Football coverage, the Megalodon adds a stylistic layer to ESPN's softball broadcasts.
Aerial coverage will also be significantly upgraded through the use of a drone system providing sweeping venue shots and transitional aerials throughout the tournament. The drone's flexibility allows operators to deliver context-rich visuals of Devon Park and the surrounding crowd environment.
Immersive POV: Umpire Mask Cam, Mic'd Up Crew Offer First-Person Perspective In a move aimed at deepening viewer immersion, ESPN has outfitted the home plate umpire with a mask-mounted POV camera for every game. This first-person perspective allows viewers to see pitch location and movement through the umpire's eyes-offering insight into both the strike zone and the pace of the game from behind the plate.
In addition, all four umpires on the field will be mic'd up for the duration of the tournament. While not all audio will be broadcast live, the ability to integrate umpire dialogue and conversations into replays and explanations adds transparency and additional narrative layers to in-game moments.
Telestration Integration: Enhanced Analysis in Real Time and Replay Telestration continues to play a central role in ESPN's coverage of WCWS, with analysts making extensive use of live and replay-based telestrations throughout the telecast. These tools allow for detailed breakdowns of defensive positioning, baserunning decisions, and pitching sequences, giving fans a clearer look at the strategy behind each play.
By combining telestration with the increased mobility and flexibility of new camera systems, ESPN's production team is delivering a more educational and insight-driven broadcast for casual viewers and softball enthusiasts alike.
Multi-Platform Distribution and Studio Support All games are being distributed across linear and streaming platforms, including ESPN+, offering simultaneous access to fans across devices. ESPN's 7Innings Live: Championship Finals Special Presented by Capital One returns as an alternative broadcast on ESPNU and ESPN+, delivering a more casual, analytics-forward viewing experience with contributions from a rotating cast of analysts and former players.
On-site studio presence is also expanded this year, with coverage anchored by NCAA Softball Championship Update and the Women's College World Series Pregame Show, both produced live from Oklahoma City. These programs feature live updates, feature segments, and breakdowns from ESPN's veteran softball talent.
