Mobile Economy China 2022 confirms 5G acceleration across the region
Launching today, the annual Mobile Economy China Report reveals continued momentum in 5G adoption, with the total number of 5G connections expected to reach 892 million in China by 2025, from 488 million 5G connections in 2021. By 2025, 5G will account for more than half of total mobile connections.
4G adoption peaked in 2020 and fell throughout 2021 as consumers increasingly switched to 5G packages. Due to the rapid take-up of 5G in China, the region is one of the global leaders in terms of 5G adoption. The growth in 5G adoption is supported by a growing device ecosystem and an increasing number of compatible handset sales and network rollouts.
Other key findings include:
By the end of 2025, 5G will account for around 52% of total mobile connections in China.
In 2021, China added more than 285 million 5G connections, with its share of global 5G connections equivalent to 75%.
In 2021, mobile technologies and services generated $900 billion of economic value, equating to 5.6% of national GDP and this is expected to grow by around $66 billion by 2025.
More than 1.04 billion people in China now use mobile internet services, with this figure expected to increase by a further 146 million by 2025, increasing the proportion of connected people to 80% of the population.
Operators in mainland China have now deployed over 1.4 million 5G base stations, with the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) setting an ambitious plan to reach 3.64 million 5G base stations by the end of 2025.
5G in Verticals in China 2022 Report reveals powerful 5G use cases
Also launching today is the 5G in Verticals in China 2022 Report, which reveals 16 5G use cases across industrial applications in the region, developed jointly by mobile network operators and technology partners in China. From intelligent subways and automated patrol inspections to environment monitoring and medical rescue command platforms, the report takes a closer look at 5G industrial application scenarios and opportunities for smart manufacturing, smart mining, and smart cities.
At the same time, GSMA Greater China has announced a 5G City task force to promote the use of 5G in transportation and logistics, emergency services, environmental protection citizen services, and digital government. The goal is to help develop solutions to enable smart cities. The task force is supported by 13 partners including China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom.
