ATSC Reports Interference Cancellation Demonstration for ATSC 3.0 in Brazil

ATSC, the Broadcast Standards Association, has reported results from a laboratory validation and live demonstration in Brazil of interference cancellation and signal reception capabilities for ATSC 3.0. The results come from ATSC's Implementation Team 5 Tower Network (IT-5).

The demonstration took place at the 2026 IEEE International Symposium on Broadband Multimedia Systems and Broadcasting (BMSB) in Jo o Pessoa, Brazil, July 8-10. It was conducted by Mackenzie Presbyterian University, using hardware, software and algorithms developed or contributed by IT-5 members at the University of the Basque Country (Spain), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI, Korea) and Western University (Canada). Researchers decoded a lower-power broadcast signal in real time while cancelling a significantly stronger signal on the same frequency.

The demonstration used an Inter-Tower Communication Network (ITCN) and Geographically Segmented Localcasting (GSL), which are intended to improve spectrum efficiency by allowing signals from local stations to overlap geographically. The desired signal was received 37 decibels below the stronger signal. The configuration had a 20 dB power difference between Tx1 and Tx2 and a 17 dB LDM injection level. ATSC says such techniques could help broadcasters improve spectrum use, support localized content delivery and explore new network configurations.

Brazil's TV 3.0 initiative has driven IT-5 members' work on Localcasting technologies. Brazil is running TV 3.0 pilots in Bras lia, S o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and field measurements at Globo's Sumar station in Rio are evaluating antenna configurations under real-world reception conditions.

The IEEE Broadcast Technology Forum takes place Oct. 27-28, 2026, at NAB headquarters in Washington, D.C. It covers topics including the evolution of ATSC 3.0, spectrum efficiency, advanced transmission technologies and emerging network architectures.

This demonstration is an important example of how ATSC 3.0 continues to evolve beyond traditional television broadcasting, says Madeleine Noland, President, ATSC. The ability to manage complex signal environments and make more efficient use of spectrum opens exciting possibilities for broadcasters. It also reinforces the value of international collaboration in moving promising technologies from the laboratory toward practical implementation.
