Agentic AI in the content supply chain

02/09/2026

Why agentic media supply chains need experience design built around visibility, reversibility and human authority

When AI can generate a functional interface in minutes, why would you invest in bespoke UX design for your media supply chain? The answer only becomes obvious after the first time your team cant override an AI-made decision at scale.

As generative AI transforms the media supply chain, a compelling idea has taken hold: since AI is doing the heavy lifting in the backend, the interface doesnt matter as much. Some organisations conclude they can use AI to generate a "good enough" UI themselves. If the backend is smart, the thinking goes, the user experience requires far less strategic investment.

Its a reasonable conclusion, and its almost right. But its missing one critical layer.

A user interface is merely the tangible execution built upon a foundation of deep research and carefully crafted user experience. AI can write code and generate a functional screen, but it cannot sit next to a stressed media operator, watch them struggle with a delivery deadline, and understand "why" a workflow is fundamentally broken. Without those foundational constraints, an AI-generated operational interface may look right while quietly missing the moments where human control actually matters.

The Problem Isnt Negligence. Its Foresight. No competent team deploys AI agents without guardrails. But even well-intentioned guardrails can only account for the failure you anticipate. The real challenge isnt a lack of caution; its the gap between what you "think" the operator needs to control and what they "actually" need to control.

Consider a quality control agent deployed across an ingest pipeline. The team has built in review steps and approval thresholds. But the agent encounters an edge case nobody mapped: a valid creative choice that looks like a defect to the model. It auto-rejects a batch of assets. The guardrail that *should* have caught it was never defined, because nobody studied where creative judgment intersects with automated pattern matching in that specific workflow.

AI errors dont scale like human errors. A human operator might mislabel one asset. An AI agent making the same misjudgement will apply it consistently across *thousands* of assets in minutes. The question isnt whether your team is careful enough to add guardrails. Its whether youve invested in understanding *where* the guardrails need to be before discovering it the hard way.

Redefining the Workflow: Agentic Experience (AX)This is why a new category of design thinking has emerged: AX, or Agentic Experience.

AX is the discipline of designing shared workflows between humans and autonomous agents. It moves the conversation from passive "human-in-the-loop" supervision to active steering, ensuring interfaces are built as collaborative spaces where machines propose actions and humans provide guidance, correction, and final authority.

The distinction matters. Traditional UI design asks: "How does the user complete this task?" AX asks: "How do the human and the agent negotiate decisions together, and where must the human remain in control?"

And crucially, this research isnt about documenting how your teams work "today". Organisations and operator roles will inevitably shift as agentic AI matures. AX focuses on the decision points that persist regardless of how the surrounding workflow changes: where creative judgment is needed, where accountability must be explicit, where reversibility is non-negotiable. Structures change. The need for human authority at critical moments does not.

When you bypass AX and let an LLM draw buttons, you arent designing a workflow. Youre hoping that the right control points happen to exist by accident.

Designing for Shared Authority: The QC AssistantAt Codemill, weve built our approach around the principle of Declarative Generative UI: giving agents a strict, brand-approved toolbox of predefined components they can assemble dynamically, but never invent from scratch.

In Accurate.Video Validate, our QC Assistant applies this approach to quality-control workflows. When an issue is detected, the assistant can assemble the relevant information and controls for that specific review. It can present a Pass/Fail recommendation, explain the reasoning behind it and direct the operator to the affected part of the asset.

The important design decision is not simply what the AI can show. It is what the operator must always be able to do: inspect the evidence, understand the recommendation, correct the interpretation and make the final decision.

The agent handles data processing and helps focus the operator's attention. The interface keeps the available actions and decision states consistent. This creates adaptability without sacrificing predictability and automation without removing human authority.

No hallucinated UI elements. No unpredictable interface states. Full control, at machine speed.

The ROI of Doing This RightDuring our work designing the global media supply chain UX for Paramount, we researched teams across CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, Showtime, and Paramount Pictures. Each had distinct operating models and legacy workflows. By studying how these teams actually worked, we designed a unified console framework now used globally. The impact was measurable: operators could troubleshoot independently without writing support tickets, and the shared design language meant a user familiar with one console could pick up another for the first time and immediately understand how to use it.

Those were traditional interfaces, not yet the agentic workspaces of tomorrow. But the framework was explicitly designed to extend. As Paramounts VP of Product noted, it "sets us up very well to leverage new technologies such as generative AI." When you invest in understanding the operators reality, the interface be
