Secret Weapon Post Uses DaVinci Resolve Studio for Gregg Araki Films

Remote post house delivers I Want Your Sex and 4K restoration for Mysterious Skin with Blackmagic Design.

Blackmagic Design today announced that remote post production house Secret Weapon Post used DaVinci Resolve Studio post production software, Blackmagic Cloud and Blackmagic Cloud Store network storage solutions to complete post for Gregg Araki's recent film projects, including I Want Your Sex and the 4K restoration of Mysterious Skin. Both projects relied on remote post production workflows, allowing the filmmakers to collaborate in real time regardless of location, saving money and aiding in the creative process.

Araki has been creating notable independent films for more than 30 years, with two new projects hitting theaters in 2026. I Want Your Sex, starring Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman and Charli xcx, premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and is now in theaters. Mysterious Skin, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, first premiered in 2004 and has been restored in 4K, bringing the film back into cinemas for a new generation of moviegoers.

Araki discussed I Want Your Sex : This is the first time I've had one of my films open on more than 700 screens, and it's amazing to think that I was able to edit it at home on my own schedule, with my entire post team working together from wherever they wanted to be, without having to remote into a post house. As a director/editor, this was the first time I cut a movie in DaVinci Resolve, and its collaboration tools made us a much nimbler team with more freedoms than you have when jumping in and out of other platforms. More importantly, it helped keep our budget on screen where it belongs.

Araki added, We also worked remotely in DaVinci Resolve with my team and Resillion Media Content Services to restore Mysterious Skin' to 4K, and the tools in DaVinci Resolve allowed me to quickly make adjustments that would've been costly and slower by any other method.

Led by Founder and CEO Greg Olliver, the team at Secret Weapon Post created the remote post workflows for each project, collaborating closely with Araki and other filmmakers across post.

According to Head of Workflow Candice Mars Williamson, CSI, For Mysterious Skin,' we seamlessly partnered with Resillion, where the grade and final deliverables were made. We had a Cloud Store at their facility with the original film scans at high res in a collaborative DaVinci Resolve project. We then generated proxies using the Blackmagic Proxy Generator. Gregg had a Cloud Store at his location, and we set it up so all the proxies and smaller files would sync to his device via Blackmagic Cloud. From there, he was able to resize and reedit as he saw fit, including adding new VFX that weren't available when the film was originally released. Simultaneously, Resillion's colorist, Bossi Baker, was making changes to the grade on the original scan files that Gregg could see on his end in real time, even though he was using proxies.

I Want Your Sex Producer and Secret Weapon Head of Post Beau Genot added, We used the same workflow on I Want Your Sex,' working with Shaley Brooks of Iris Digital Post. We worked closely to set up the workflow over six months to ensure we had all the kinks worked out, and then once production started, Shaley had the master drive and would process and upload the dailies. The proxies were then set up to download remotely for Gregg as the editor and Victor Parra as the assistant editor.

As a director and producer, I know firsthand how much money can be wasted in post when your team is remoting into a traditional post house, Olliver noted. When Beau first approached us as the producer for these projects and explained that Gregg was excited to try new things, we knew immediately how Blackmagic Design and DaVinci Resolve might help. We ran numbers for Beau, did some demos for Gregg and his AE, showed them that Mars would be there to guide them through the learning process, and then we were off and running.

Mysterious Skin Resolve Workflow

Genot noted that while collaboration was at the heart of the workflow, the decision to handle post remotely with DaVinci Resolve Studio and Blackmagic Cloud was also strongly driven by cost savings. The goal was to save time and money while still having ease of use. DaVinci Resolve streamlined the process, therefore enabling us to attain both, Genot detailed. Since everyone was working with the same files, we were able to do multiple things at the same time. For example, color correction was happening as we were still cutting; Shaley and Iris Digital could follow behind and keep up with the editorial process; VFX pulls and work were simplified and much easier to accomplish; and we could continue making editorial changes right up until the final mix.

Williamson echoed the sentiment: The workflow's biggest selling point is saving time which then saves money; everyone's favorite part because you don't have to spend time roundtripping and conforming. And you can have people working simultaneously on the project and, in some cases, the same timeline.

These cost savings helped put money back into other areas of the projects. For example, Williamson shared: For Mysterious Skin,' Gregg was pretty excited about updating the VFX. There were a lot of things he was able to add to the film to enhance it in a way he couldn't when it was first released without incurring costs.
