How do stakeholders across the defense, civil and commercial sectors - as well as across nations - work together to ensure that space is a safe, secure and responsibly maintained domain? That was a key focus of this year's thought-provoking Women's Global Gathering Luncheon panel discussion, hosted by L3Harris during Space Symposium 2023 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Space Sustainability and Resilience was the theme of the panel, which was composed of accomplished leaders from the National Space Council, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United Nations, NASA, Maxar and L3Harris. Panelists included:
Dr. Diane Howard - Director of Commercial Space Policy for the National Space Council (NSpC) & Chief Counsel for Space Commerce at the U.S. Department of Commerce
Allison Areias - Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)
Casey Swails, Deputy Associate Administrator for Business Operations, NASA
Karen Cox, VP Government Relations and Public Policy, Maxar
Tara Solorzano, NTS-3 Lead/Fellow, L3Harris
This year's Women's Global Gathering panel, hosted by Praveen Kurian, General Manager of L3Harris' Space Superiority business, and moderated by Stacy Casella, General Manager of L3Harris' Autonomous Intelligence Solutions business, covered a wide range of topics tied to sustainability and resilience.
These topics ranged from debris mitigation and space traffic management to international cooperation and how to gain alignment across the space community to support space sustainability.
The panelists also touched upon their paths to becoming leaders in the Aerospace and Defense industry and the important role of women in the exploration, development and management of space.
Key Takeaways:
Space is a growing domain - one that's critical for government, civil and commercial missions as well as worldwide economic success. To experience the full benefits of space as a society, we need to be responsible stewards of the domain.
Working together and embracing diverse perspectives makes us stronger and more prepared to address the world's most challenging problems and meet today's growing demands and opportunities in space - without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.
Even though we're part of different companies and organizations, we're all on the same team when it comes to space sustainability. One team. One fight.
L3Harris is developing resilient space-based capabilities across key mission areas, including missile defense; positioning, navigation and timing (PNT); weather; communications; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) - because our nation and our warfighters require it, said L3Harris panelist, Fellow and NTS-3 Lead, Tara Solorzano.
When it comes to space sustainability, the U.S. military relies on L3Harris' space domain awareness (SDA) technology to closely monitor space objects, like debris, to prevent collisions and protect critical space assets. Learn more about our SDA capabilities here.
