A pair of LANTIME IMS M2000 PTP Grandmasters deliver resilient timing infrastructure for Kaseya Center
Miami HEAT home games at Kaseya Center rely on production systems operating in perfect synchronization. Multifaceted shows, with multiple layers of technology from both inside and outside the control room, are produced via the IP-driven backbone recently installed at the venue. Part of a recent transition to an IP-based broadcast environment, two Meinberg LANTIME Intelligent Modular Synchronization (IMS) M2000 PTP Grandmasters provide the highly accurate, resilient timing required for mission-critical live shows.
Due to the venue's proximity to Miami International Airport, along with other environmental factors affecting satellite reception, the existing timing system experienced intermittent GNSS signal interruptions and hardware failures, says Steve Kolta, Senior Broadcast Engineer, Meinberg. By deploying our GNS/GNM183 multi-band, dual-frequency GNSS receivers with significantly higher satellite-channel capacity, the system gains much greater resilience. It maintains reliable satellite reception and greatly reduces the risk of losing synchronization.
Prior to last season, Miami HEAT Senior Director, Broadcast Services, Blake Engman and Broadcast Network Engineer Reginald Philogene experienced recurring synchronization issues with the previous timing infrastructure. In a venue located less than 10 miles from the airport, GNSS reception interruptions occasionally caused the timing system to lose lock. Without a stable timing reference, portions of the control room's IP production environment could become unavailable, jeopardizing the quality of the production.
After a couple of engineering consultations to evaluate the existing infrastructure and identify the root cause of the disruptions, Kolta and Meinberg Technical Support Engineer Matt Silver worked closely with the Heat production team to design and implement new synchronization architecture. The newly installed system delivers the reliability and redundancy required for uninterrupted in-venue productions.
The Miami HEAT control-room upgrade centers on two devices from Meinberg's LANTIME IMS M2000 platform, the company's flagship modular synchronization system. The HEAT went with two identical chassis configured in a fully redundant architecture, Kolta explains. If one unit were ever to go offline, the second system automatically assumes the Grandmaster role with hitless switchover. In addition, each chassis contains redundant power and synchronization components, providing multi-layers of protection and exceptional resilience for the facility's PTP infrastructure.
The solution is built around two devices from Meinberg's LANTIME IMS M2000 platform, the company's flagship modular synchronization system. Each chassis is configured with IMS-PSX210 modules providing native 10-Gb Ethernet PTP interface; high-performance multiband, multichannel GNSS receivers for robust satellite synchronization; and high-stability oscillator modules that maintain precise holdover during temporary GNSS outages. The modular architecture enables the system to support multiple PTP profiles - ST 2110, AES67, AVB 802.1AS - as well as legacy baseband reference signals and also provides the flexibility to expand.
The Miami HEAT further extends Meinberg's growing global presence across professional-sports and live-event production facilities, where reliable timing and synchronization have become foundational to IP-based broadcast workflows.
The project carries even greater significance as the recently renovated control room prepares for another NBA season, ensuring that every production is synchronized and ready for the demands of live NBA broadcasts.
PTP is the heart of the entire SMPTE ST 2110 infrastructure, adds Kolta. We're excited and proud to be a part of this respected organization.
