Sandy Grossman's Legacy as a Pioneering Director Earns Pro Football Hall of Fame's Pete Rozelle Award

The first live-sports director to receive the prestigious honor, eight-time Emmy winner, and Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer directed a record 10 Super Bowls and helped define the visual language of modern NFL coverage

When Dean Grossman takes the stage during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinees' Gold Jacket Dinner in downtown Canton, OH, Friday night, he may be standing in front of a room packed to the rafters with NFL giants, but he'll be completely in his element.

He'll be doing one of the things he loves most: telling stories about his best friend.

The son of legendary sports-television director Sandy Grossman will be there to accept the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2026 Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award on behalf of his father, an honor both aptly fitting and a long time coming.

It's surreal and also very exciting, Dean says. I'm excited for all of us. I'm excited for the family. I'm excited for the kids. It's going to mean a lot to them. It's going to mean a lot to all of us.

Sandy Grossman will become the first director to receive the prestigious Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Friday.For generations of football fans, Sandy Grossman's influence could be seen every Sunday, even if the man himself remained largely unseen at the front bench of a production truck. He was the director at the center of one of sports television's most iconic teams, joining play-by-play announcer Pat Summerall, analyst John Madden, and producer Bob Stenner in setting the standard for NFL coverage for more than two decades.

Grossman widened the primary camera shot so that audiences could see the outside linebackers. He deployed isolation cameras to capture the individual battles that determined a play. He studied film relentlessly, anticipated Madden's analysis, and developed an uncanny ability to find the emotion hidden inside a helmet, along a sideline, or in the face of an exhausted player.

More than a decade after his death, Grossman will become the first Rozelle Award recipient whose primary role was in the director's chair. Although the honor most often has gone to on-air talent, Grossman joins a select group of behind-the-scenes recipients: Bill MacPhail (1989), Ed Sabol (1991), Roone Arledge (2001), David Hill (2017), Dick Ebersol (2019), and Fred Gaudelli (2023).

The Hall of Fame each year recognizes the contributions and impact of an individual to professional football through television and radio, and Sandy Grossman set the standard for broadcast directors, said Jim Porter, president/CEO, Pro Football Hall of Fame, when the honor was announced in March. This award reflects Sandy's indisputable legacy on television, his passion for sports broadcasting, and the innovations he brought to telecasts - many that remain fixtures to this day. With today's media landscape, it seems unlikely anyone will surpass his 10 Super Bowls as director.

The Director Behind a Football Dynasty

Grossman's career numbers are staggering: 10 Super Bowls, 18 NBA Finals, five Stanley Cup Finals, multiple Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and eight Emmy Awards.

The numbers, however, tell only part of the story.
