The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) says that at least one in every three people are depressed.

Depressive disorders are a group of health conditions. Feelings of powerlessness, sadness, and lack of interest in activities are common.

Unfortunately, depression also attaches to stigma.

Depression: are ugogo nomkhulu hiding their feelings? SADAG says depression is a common health condition in South Africa.
Estimates guess that at least one in three people could struggle with depressive feelings or anxiety. Statistics could even be higher, if more of the population admitted their symptoms openly.
Depression can affect anyone.
The elderly are often at increased risk, according to studies.
Older people are more likely to hide their feelings or emotions. Elderly people might also not realize depression is treatable.
Have you spoken to your elders about their feelings?
If not, do it.
Depression in South Africa Depressive disorders can refer to several health conditions, including clinical depression.
Symptoms include feelings of giving up, or feeling sadness and anxiety. Some depressive disorders present in mania, or feeling too busy' to focus.
A depressed person doesn't necessarily want to harm themselves or others.
According to WebMD, depression and its related disorders are treatable.

Speak to the Department of Social Development (DSD) for more information about counselling and obtaining help. The Department of Health and your nearest clinic can also assist.
