Lightware Helps Integrators Overcome MacBook Neo USB Topo...

Lightware testing has revealed that each USB-C port on Apple's new MacBook Neo consumes three of the seven USB tiers available under the USB specification, compared with two tiers typically used by other Apple M-series MacBooks. This reduced topology headroom can prevent cameras, microphones and other peripherals from being detected in professional meeting room and AV-over-IP systems.

The MacBook Neo's two USB-C ports also have different capabilities. One supports USB 3, DisplayPort video and charging, while the other is limited to USB 2 and charging and does not support DisplayPort video. For integrators, understanding these differences is an important part of specifying the system.

To help integrators avoid these issues, Lightware combines low-tier USB-C cabling, USBXpert topology diagnostics and a portfolio of extension and switching solutions designed for different room sizes and transmission distances.

A USB-C connector may look universal, but the topology behind it is not, says Gergely Vida, CEO of Lightware. With the MacBook Neo, integrators have less room for additional hubs and extension devices, so a system that appears straightforward can reach the USB tier limit before all peripherals are detected.

Managing USB Topology From the Outset

Lightware's USB-C cables are designed to minimize additional tiers in the signal path. Its passive USB-C cables add virtually no tiers while supporting USB 3.1 data, power delivery and video. For longer runs, Lightware's Active Optical Cable (AOC) adds only one tier while supporting uncompressed 4K60 video, USB 3.1 data and charging.

Additionally, Lightware's USBXpert tool, part of the USB20 1GbE Configurator, provides a visual overview of USB topology, tier depth, bandwidth and device state, helping identify potential limitations when designing or troubleshooting systems with multiple connected devices. USBXpert currently runs on Windows, so integrators can use a Windows laptop to validate USB topology when working with Mac-based systems.

Building USB-C Into the Wider AV System

For local meeting room collaboration, Lightware's Taurus UCX combines USB-C video, charging, USB 3.1 data and host switching in a single platform. Where signals need to travel beyond the immediate presenter or display position, Taurus TPX extends uncompressed 4K60 video, audio and control alongside USB 2.0 data over a single CAT cable for distances of up to 100 meters. For larger distributed environments, Lightware's Gemini GVN extends 4K60 video and USB 2.0 across multiple endpoints and rooms using managed 1G Ethernet infrastructure, with native USB-C support.

There is no single solution to every USB-C deployment, says Vida. The right approach depends on the devices involved, the distance and the complexity of the system. Our aim is to give integrators the flexibility to choose the right combination of cabling, extension and diagnostic tools while maintaining visibility of the complete USB path.
