Industry Alert: Our industrys charity needs your help

The cinema exhibition, distribution, production and post-production sectors are being asked to help give aid to those in need.

The Motion Picture Industry Benevolent Society (MPIBS) is calling on the wider filmmaking community to give back and help those in need through its annual appeal letter.

Now in its 85th year, the non-profit MPIBS is being met with increasing demand for emotional and financial aid, meaning contributions are as important as ever.

We're really reliant on donations from the industry bodies, the enterprises and individuals, who have been very generous in the past, Chairman Murray Forrest says.

I realise in this day and age it can be difficult drumming up money, but to look after one's own is important.

The assistance may be in the form of monthly payments to go toward private health fund payments, special hospital treatments, pharmaceutical expenses, wheelchairs, breathing apparatus or funeral costs, among others.

Mr Forrest says the support is not just financial, but emotional.

We care for and look after people, visit them in hospital, make sure they're comfortable and know that we're thinking of them and their families as well, he says.

The level of support is determined by the MPIBS council, Mr Murrary says, who are given recommendations by the association's Chairman of Investigation and Relief Australian producer Tom Jeffrey.

While originally created in 1931 to help the cinema exhibition and distribution workers, it was extended in 2003 to include production and post-production people who have fallen on tough times.

It really covers the whole gambit of the film industry, Mr Forrest says.

The Motion Picture Industry Benevolent Society (MPIBS) of NSW provides financial and emotional assistance to film industry workers who have fallen on hard times.

Established in 1931 for cinema exhibition and distribution workers hit hard by the Great Depression, it has accepted beneficiaries from the film production and post-production sector since 2003. It is the only state benevolent society providing support to current or former workers and their spouses - in all states throughout Australia.

Without additional contributions, the Society cannot meet the increasing demand from the film production & post-production sectors.

The MPIBS recognises the challenges faced by film production and post-production personnel who need to set aside funds for a possible rainy day , especially in an increasingly uncertain production environment. In the knowledge that the MPIBS will be there to provide support and comfort, we appeal to you to make a donation to support the vital work the MPIBS is doing on behalf of you and your colleagues.
