A Modern Field of Dreams: Inside the Video Technology Powering Northwestern's New Ryan Field

21/10/2026

The Wildcats' $875 million home blends an intimate 35,000-seat design with 32 million LED pixels, a dedicated in-venue control room, and an infrastructure built to evolve

The piercing opening guitar chords of AC/DC's Thunderstruck cascaded through Northwestern University's New Ryan Field. The Wildcats were about to take the field, and the brand-new stadium was about to have its long-awaited moment.

For fans experiencing their new home for the first time, it was the kind of theatrical team entrance that makes college football special. For New Ryan Field Director of Technology Luke Roberson, it was something else entirely: relief.

Two days earlier, Roberson's crew had been pulling every switch out of the production network. The control room, originally scheduled to be finished in July, was still a work in progress. After months of equipment specifications, construction challenges, and last-minute troubleshooting, the introduction needed to come together perfectly.

That sequence going well and going as we planned was the moment that it hit me, Roberson recalls, and it started to make it all seem worth it.

Northwestern University's New Ryan Field opened on Oct. 2. The Wildcats christened their home with a victory over Penn State. (Photos: Northwestern Athletics)That moment, developed under the creative direction of television producer Jesse Collins, was the culmination of weeks of coordination with FOX Sports and was a fitting introduction to a facility that is itself something of a college-football rarity: an entirely new stadium built from the ground up.

With so many venerable venues celebrating centennials, major programs tend to renovate rather than start over. Northwestern went in another direction. Its $875 million New Ryan Field, which opened in Evanston, IL, Oct. 2 against Penn State, has just 35,000 seats - the smallest capacity in the Big Ten - and a design more evocative of a premium European soccer ground than a sprawling American football stadium. A canopy wraps the seating bowl; every fan has a chairback seat; and close, arena-like sightlines emphasize intimacy over raw capacity.

The project was curated by Ryan Sports Development, led by Pat Ryan Jr., whose family helped make the stadium possible. The Ryan family, among the nation's most prominent philanthropic families, has contributed more than $1 billion to Northwestern, according to Roberson, supporting initiatives well beyond athletics. Ryan Sports Development oversaw the stadium's design and development, creating the framework for the in-venue operation.

Behind the architectural vision is equally ambitious technology: 11 LED displays encompassing 32.1 million pixels, extensive RF-camera coverage, and Northwestern's first production-control room dedicated exclusively to the in-venue show.

Our goal was to not reinvent the sport or reinvent the stadium experience, Roberson says. Our goal was to just do it better than anybody else had ever done it.

A Dedicated Home for Game-Day Production

Located at field level, roughly 25 ft. from the sideline, the new control room represents a departure from Northwestern's previous approach, in which two campus facilities handled a mix of streaming and videoboard productions. This one was designed expressly for the stadium, while providing a model for future control-room renovations across athletics.

Do we just want to build a third control room of what we already have, or do we want to build a unique control room that is our flagship space? Roberson remembers asking. [The latter] is the route we went.

He joined Northwestern in July 2024 and began specifying stadium systems that fall. Anthony James Partners' Peter Dudley and Mike Martin worked with Roberson to drive the broadcast and LED scopes through procurement and project management. Following equipment evaluations and the 2025 NAB Show, the team finalized its gear list and moved into procurement.

New Ryan Field's dedicated in-venue production-control room features a Grass Valley K-Frame switcher, Evertz NEXX routing and DreamCatcher replay, along with Riedel communications infrastructure. At the core of the operation is a 3G-SDI baseband production system featuring a Grass Valley K-Frame switcher with a 3M/E Kayenne panel, Evertz NEXX routing, and Evertz DreamCatcher replay. Grass Valley LDX 150 and LDX 135 cameras are paired with two Fujinon UA107x8.4 lenses and three UA24x7.8 lenses. A Wave Central-equipped wireless camera joins two shallow-depth-of-field, Megalodon-style wireless cameras, and a Riedel intercom system with 25 Bolero beltpacks and Boland monitors round out key production components. Roberson also credits camera-support manufacturer Cartoni for working overtime on last-minute tripod adjustments ahead of the opener.

There is one unusual wrinkle to the room's field-level location: operators cannot look out directly onto the field. CG positions upstairs in the press box maintain direct views of the videoboards and ribbons, but the control-room team relies on an extensive multiviewer setup to see what's happening.

That includes feeds from an integrated eight-camera Panasonic AW-UR100 coaching PTZ system, which provides wide views of the playing surface, and confidence feeds of the main boards and ribbons and additional venue POV cameras. During the opener, Northwestern also borrowed a wide-angle feed from FOX's reverse-50-yard-line beauty camera; Roberson hopes to install a similar permanent view.

Prep for game one was almost like subsistence, he says. What can we do to get this game up and going? And then we'll figure out how to make processes more efficient and more streamlined down the line.

Resolution Takes Priority Over Size

For all the sophistication tucked away in the control room, the most visible technology is impossible
