Intel RealSense camera technology

Intel is reportedly joining Google and Microsoft in developing an augmented reality (AR) headset, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The headset will offer an alternative to a busy VR market, occupied by the likes of Facebook's Oculus Rift, with other players like Apple keen to enter both the VR and AR market.

Intel is believed to be incorporating its RealSense 3D camera technology into the device, which it has already promoted as part of VR headsets, with limited traction.

RealSense modules consist of two Infrared (IR) sensors that receive information created by projecting a structured light field using an IR laser illuminator. This allows the module to create a VGA-resolution depth map of objects within its field of view. Production modules feature one or more RGB cameras that can be used to create a combined RGB-D rendering.

Intel is thought to be seizing the opportunity to create an augmented visual experience, following the slow uptake of Google Glass, and Microsoft's recent introduction of its HoloLens headset.

Intel and Microsoft could potentially work in collaboration to develop the AR headset. Intel has highlighted that they are not likely to market the technology itself, instead choosing to provide it to other companies.

The company has not commented on the project, and no manufacturing partners have been publicised. Intel could perhaps will wait until its developer conference in August to shed some light on its AR plans.
