A deep dive into VR underwater world with Habitat XR and Mistika VR

Discover how award-winning immersive production studio Habitat XR captured and created underwater wildlife experiences in Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique with Mistika VR.

In this video Case Study, Ulrico Grech Cumbo, CEO and Jolene van Antwerp, Head of Post-Production at Habitat XR take us through the process of creating underwater VR media from shooting to stitching.

The Mozambique project was stereoscopic, so they opted for the Insta360 Pro 2 camera with Mantis underwater housing. Ulrico says that they prefer stereoscopic VR because of its realism the more life-like the scene is, the more immersed the viewers feel. The golden rule of filming is to avoid your subject matter changing proximity to the camera. Good luck doing that with wildlife! Fortunately we can turn to intelligent software to simplify these uniquely complex problems.

On the shoot, they were lucky enough to spot a very rare potato grouper fish that came very close to the camera. The challenge the team faced later on in post-production was to get the perfect stitch so the stitch lines would not be noticed when watched in VR. When our cinematographers finally capture that one magical moment, it's up to our post team to produce a seamless stereoscopic stitch. Without Mistika VR's keyframes and edge points, we wouldn't have a shot, concluded Jolene.
