For BMG Executive Producer of Sports Production, Graham Taylor, producing live sports is about anticipating what could happen, understanding the story of the game, and giving the production team the direction needed to respond in real time.
As live sports productions become more complex, producers are working across larger crews, distributed production environments, advanced graphics and replay systems, and multiple broadcast and streaming destinations. Taylor's approach centers on bringing those elements together while keeping the audience experience top priority.
Preparation Drives the ProductionFor Taylor, the work begins well before the game starts.
Preparing for a live sports broadcast means understanding the event, developing potential storylines, researching teams and players, coordinating with talent, and working with production and technical teams to establish how the show will come together.
That preparation gives the production team a framework while allowing room to adapt. Live sports can change at any moment, and Taylor understands the importance of anticipating scenarios and making sure the team is prepared to respond when the unexpected happens.
The producer also works across departments to ensure creative decisions can be supported operationally. Camera coverage, graphics, replay, audio, engineering, talent, and production timing all have to work together to create a live broadcast.
Making Decisions in Real TimeOnce the broadcast is live, Taylor's role shifts from preparation to execution.
A sports producer is constantly evaluating and determining what deserves the audience's attention. For example, a play may require an immediate replay, a momentum shift may change the direction of the broadcast, and a moment may create a new storyline entirely.
At the same time, Taylor has to keep the production aligned with commercial breaks, sponsored elements, interviews, scheduled segments, and the overall broadcast clock.
The result is a role that requires quick decision-making without losing sight of the larger story.
Connecting Creative and Technical TeamsTaylor's position also requires constant communication across the production environment.
He works with directors, camera operators, replay and graphics teams, audio engineers, technical staff, commentators, and other production personnel to make sure everyone understands the priorities of the broadcast.
The producer is about understanding how each part of the production contributes to the finished broadcast and making sure those teams are working toward the same objective.
That coordination becomes especially important when the production encounters an unexpected challenge.
Adapting to Remote and Hybrid ProductionThe evolution of REMI and hybrid production has also changed how Taylor approaches live sports.
With camera and production signals transported from the venue to centralized facilities, producers can work with production teams without everyone needing to be physically located at the event.
These workflows can provide greater access to production resources, reduce travel and setup requirements, and allow organizations to support more events with centralized teams.
For the producer, however, remote production creates an increased need for communication.
Taylor must maintain coordination between the centralized production team and personnel at the venue, ensuring that creative decisions can still be executed effectively despite the physical distance.
Keeping the Focus on the ViewerUltimately, Taylor's job comes down to making decisions that improve the broadcast for the audience.
Technology, production infrastructure, graphics, replay, and communications all support that objective, but they are tools within a larger storytelling process.
For Taylor, successful sports production means knowing when to follow the planned production and when to adapt based on what is happening in front of the audience.
That balance between preparation and reaction is what makes live sports different from any other form of production.
The Producer Behind the ProductionAs sports broadcasts continue to evolve, the role of the producer is expanding with them. Producers today may be responsible for coordinating traditional on-site production, REMI workflows, remote teams, multiple distribution platforms, and increasingly complex technical environments.
At BMG, Taylor brings those creative, technical, and operational considerations together to help deliver live sports productions from planning through execution.
His approach demonstrates that while technology continues to change the way sports are produced, the producer remains central to making the decisions that turn live action into a compelling broadcast.
