Sky promises Fluid Viewing with new service

Sky has announced its new home entertainment system, Sky Q, designed to create a TV viewing ecosystem' in the home. The new service will enable users to watch content all around the home on different devices, as part of what the company has dubbed Fluid Viewing'.

Users will be able to watch from a Sky box anywhere around the home on another TV or tablet, with the ability to pause viewing on one TV screen and pick up in another room. Shows can be saved to a tablet to watch anywhere, and different programmes can be screen on up to five screens across the house simultaneously while also recording four other channels.

Sky Q also features a new touchpad remote, new TV guide, and improved search function. The service will allow users to access videos from YouTube, watch on-demand music videos from the new Vevo app and stream web content to any TV connected to Sky Q or Sky Q Mini. Initial streaming partners include include Cond Nast Entertainment, GoPro and Red Bull Media House. In addition to internet video content, Sky Q customers will be able to browse their Facebook photos and stream music wirelessly over their TV sound system with Bluetooth or Apple's AirPlay.

Sky Q will be available in the UK and Ireland in early 2016, though the cost of the service has yet to be announced. Sky Q will be Ultra HD ready in advance of the launch of the company's UHD service later in 2016, which promises a range sports, movies, and entertainment content.

We wanted to re-imagine TV so that it's flexible and seamless across different screens and to put a huge choice of entertainment at their fingertips. We think customers are going to love Sky Q and the great news is that it will get even better with much more to come in the future.

Sky Q's Fluid Viewing' experience is powered by a new range of Sky products including Sky Q Silver and Sky Q, two boxes for the main TV set, featuring up to 12 tuners and up to 2TB of storage; Sky Q Mini,a plug and play box giving wireless access to Sky Q in other rooms; and a Sky Q app.
