Berklee s Valencia Campus 0 Summer Programs

April 9, 2013 Berklee College of Music announces the details of its 2013 summer programs at its Valencia campus in Spain. The programs allow international students to experience Berklees state-of-the-art facilities while they hone their musical talents, perfect practical skills, and network in a multicultural environment.

Students may choose from one of four programs offered in July and August. Taught by world-renowned Berklee faculty and visiting guest artists, the programs will cover topics such as performance, conducting, music technology, and composition and arranging.

Valencia Summer Performance Program (July 16 August 2, 2013)

Berklee is offering its first Valencia Summer Performance Program. Open to singers, as well as instrumentists, this comprehensive three-week course is designed to improve and enhance the performance skills of musicians of all levels by emphasizing the mastery of playing or singing in one of three performance tracks: Jazz, Latin Jazz and Fusion; Rock, Pop and R&B; or Mediterranean Music.

Through a series of classes, workshops and rehearsals designed to emphasize creativity and performance, students will play in ensembles, develop improvisional skills, improve technique, and enjoy lectures and demonstrations by well-known faculty and visiting artists. Benefiting from the world-class facilities at the Valencia campus, students will also record a song in Berklees state-of-the-art studios.

Artistic Director: Victor Mendoza, renowned vibraphonist and director of the master's program in contemporary performance at the Berklee in Valencia campus.

Re-Tool: Electronic Technology in Music Performance and Production (July 19-21, 2013)

Centering on the role of technology in music, this three-day workshop will teach students how laptops, turntables, DJs, virtual instruments, mobile apps, and devices are used in productions and performances both live and in studios. Students will study some of the most recent developments in music, including hip-hop, techno, turntablism, beat-making and remixing, and will explore how these new forms combine with jazz, classical, and popular music.

Students will learn how to harness technology to make their own mark in music creation through classes such as Turntable Technique, Listening Like a Producer, Production Master Class, Synthesizer Programming, Music Production with Ableton Live, Art and Tradition of Hip-Hop, Song Demo Production, Production and Performance with Model Apps and Devices.

Symphonic Band Workshops

A choice of two symphonic band workshops are being offered:

Arranging and Composition for Symphonic Bands (July 8-12, 2013)

The first of two five-day symphonic band workshops, Arranging and Composition for Symphonic Bands aims to improve the skills of conductors, arrangers, and composers while enabling them to learn more repertoires. This course will teach students the basics of arranging for any ensemble, and will demonstrate specific arranging techniques. In addition, composers will be able to present their compositions in a master class setting. Students have the option of attending the conducting workshops in the evening.

Conducting for Symphonic Bands (July 8-12, 2013)

For those wishing to learn what it takes to be a professional conductor for a symphonic band, the Berklee in Valencia Symphonic Band Conducting Workshop provides an unparalleled five-day intensive practical course that teaches students what they need to embark on a professional career as a conductor. It gives them the practice and experience to lead symphonic bands while helping them identify their unique strengths and making their conducting stand out from the rest.

Faculty: Gregory Fritze, professor of composition. Fritze, a tubaist, is also a conductor, composer, and performer.
