Sweetwater's Dolby Atmos Airstream Studio Makes Two Nashville-Area Stops

Sweetwater's Dolby Atmos mobile recording studio, built inside an Airstream travel trailer, will make two Nashville-area appearances as part of a nationwide tour. It will be at Middle Tennessee State University on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and at the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Nashville event at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center on Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1.

At MTSU, the Airstream will be parked at the Mass Communication Building on the Murfreesboro campus all day and open to students and faculty. Two sessions are scheduled for undergraduate and graduate students. At 9:40 a.m., Mark Hornsby and Russ Berger of Russ Berger Design Group, which designed the Airstream, will present Designing for Dolby Atmos, covering room geometry, acoustics, monitoring, and loudspeaker placement for Atmos recording and mixing environments, using the Airstream as an example. At 2:40 p.m., Hornsby, an MTSU alumnus and president of Russ Berger Design Group, which designed MTSU's Mass Communication Building and original recording studios, will present Building a Career in Today's Audio Industry, on his path from student to a career spanning music production, engineering, studio design, consulting, and executive leadership. A member of Sweetwater's recruiting team will join part of the session to discuss career paths in the audio industry, including at Sweetwater.

At AES Nashville, the Airstream will be on exhibition throughout the show. Sweetwater and Russ Berger Design Group representatives will run live workshops in the studio, including instruction on immersive and spatial audio.

Designed by Russ Berger Design Group on a 25-foot Airstream chassis, the studio has a 7.1.4 immersive monitoring environment. An SSL System T console runs on a Dante backbone for digital routing, and Avid's MTRX II hosts Pro Tools HDX and DSP processing. Playback is through a 7.1.4 PMC immersive audio studio monitor and Dolby Atmos speaker system. A custom acoustically treated area is set up for podcasting and streaming. The studio runs on an Apple Mac Studio M3 Ultra and is wired with True North cabling.

Before Nashville, the Airstream visited Dallas, where it hosted a recording session at SSL Live at the University of Texas at Dallas, and Minneapolis, where it was part of the 4Learning RemixED Conference.
