Wavescape film contest and festival

A short film contest in Cape Town presents adventure filmmakers with a unique chance to win a film deal to develop their skillset and widen their network in this genre. The Wavescape Shortcuts Contest, in collaboration with Red Bull Media House, enables filmmakers to enter a short film from one to six minutes long of an extreme or adventure sport: either documentary, fiction or action film set to music.

The winner will collaborate with top producers and filmmakers from Red Bull Media House (RBMH) to co-produce a film in 2016 after the best three films are selected by a panel of judges and screened at this year's Wavescape Festival, presented by Pick n Pay, in December.

Red Bull South Africa said the contest is in line with our objectives of giving wings to up and coming talent in the film industry with an offer to the winner of an opportunity to collaborate on a project in 2016. The genre, timings, scope and budget for the project will be defined based on further discussion with the winners .

Entrants to the contest, as well as other interested filmmakers, are also invited to the Shortcuts Film Workshop presented by Wesgo Film and Media Promotion. The workshop, which takes place at the SAE film collage in Woodstock on Thursday 3 December, is free to filmmakers, and includes talks by industry experts on funding, technology and technique.

Steve Pike, co-director of the 12th annual Wavescape Festival of which Shortcuts forms a part, said: In a country where jobs are in short supply, the film industry is booming with potential for motivated and talented filmmakers, and in Cape Town, we have the unique geographic and meteorological platform for a range of extreme sport and adventure films, from our wild weather, untamed seas, to craggy mountain ranges and raging rivers inland. Projects like these can help the Western Cape become the Adventure Capital of the World.
