New Project to promote Film in Township High Schools

The South African Film Training and Events Consortium (SAFTEC) in partnership with the Es'kia Mphahlele Library and the Pretoria based Konani School of Media Film and Television, invites high school students and teachers to the launch of the Gauteng Film Club Project, to be held at the E'skia Mphahlele Library on Sammy Marks Square on the 18 March at 11am.

The main objective of the project is to introduce careers in film and television in black high schools, and to promote access to cinema in the schools and community libraries. The project will be piloted in Tshwane in 2014 and will later be rolled out across the various regions of Gauteng.

According to Basil Dube, executive chairman of saftec, the project offers young people the opportunity to participate in film activities which will include screenings, group discussions, visual storytelling and motivational conversations with well known filmmakers and actors.

Our mission is to introduce our youth to filmmaking at an early age and to prepare them for diverse careers in the film and television industry. Under the erstwhile apartheid establishment opportunities like these were preserved for white kids only. Saftec is committed to the empowerment of young and talented black youth' said Dube

The highlight of the project will be an annual short scriptwriting competition aimed at unearthing new story talent in black high schools. Ten high schools from across Tshwane will be invited to take part in this seminal project. The ultimate winners of the competition will be offered free mentorship by Konani School of Media Film and Television. This will result in the students shooting and directing their own short movies.

Dube is encouraging local production companies, independent filmmakers,business and education departments to support the initiative.

Saftec is a Tshwane based non-profit organization that promotes film growth through education, exhibitions and festivals. The organization focuses on youth and women empowerment through cinema.
