Fujifilm Pledge AI Will Support Radiologists - Not Replace Them

With Artificial Intelligence (AI) dominating both the headlines and the conversation at the major radiology events over recent months there is a lot of anticipation and maybe a little trepidation in the radiology community about the changes it may bring. Whilst there is no doubt that these technologies will bring huge new potential to the medical imaging industry, many are wondering how this may affect their work in the coming years. AI has the potential to not only transform the digital landscape across healthcare but it will also play a crucial role in the transition to value based care models and precision medicine.

Our goal is to expand our AI capabilities and provide powerful tools to radiologists - developing technology that supports them not replaces them says Johann Fernando, Growth Specialist in Medical Devices at Fujifilm USA. We believe AI can help radiologists manage workflows faster, improve accuracy, achieve better patient outcomes and allow clinicians to better prioritise their work and time. By leveraging the speed of the server side technologies in SYNAPSE 5 we aim to bring AI directly into the applications radiologists use every day to help them improve their efficiency.

Fujifilm's AI Research Project is working to refine the potential and reform the perceptions of this disruptive technology by harnessing the power of AI capabilities to enhance imaging informatics tools. At HIMSS18 Fujifilm led a focus group with CHIME, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, discussing the Practical Impact of AI on Enterprise Medical Informatics Strategies . The group explored how a long term medical informatics strategy can allow enterprises to position their healthcare systems to take advantage of new cognitive-computing and imaging-science breakthroughs to achieve better patient care and data analytics.

We're bringing together brilliant minds to deliver this project says Johann. Our researchers in Raleigh, NC where the project is based are collaborating with Fujifilm's development team in Tokyo who bring a multitude of image recognition technologies and expertise, and these teams are joined by strategic customers in the US. Those customers are key to the success of our project as they allow us to draw on real-world clinical insights and experiences to bridge the AI applications and imaging informatics solutions.
