Fantastic support for students! 100% discount on au apps, video and music services for up to 6 months No.2016-006
KDDI CORPORATION
Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company
January 12,2016
KDDI and Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company will launch a campaign on January 14, 2016, to offer free 5GB of data every month up to age 25 to customers aged 25 or under who subscribe to Flat-rate Data 5/8/10/13. Customers aged 25 or under (and their families) who sign up for Flat-rate Data 5/8/10/13 when making a new contract (including MNP) will also be eligible for a 1,000 discount ( 934 in the case of LTE Flat) off monthly flat-rate data charges for up to one year.
Existing au users aged 25 or under can receive the same privileges by changing their phone model during the campaign period.
The smartphone penetration rate among young people in their teens and 20s is around 80% as of the end of September 2015. The average smartphone monthly data usage is 5.3GB in the 13-25 age range (student generation) as against 3.6GB for au overall, and it is continuing to rise.
In addition, approximately 40% of users in the 13-25 age range (student generation) exceed the monthly data quantity under their contract plan, a sign of the need for higher data quantities in the contract plans. (Data from November 2015)
Under the 2016 Student Discount Plan, au will launch a campaign to enable customers aged 25 or under, the heaviest data users, to get more fun out of their smartphones by giving them 5GB of data free every month, thus relieving worries about data quantity. At the same time, to allow enjoyment of apps, video, music and other entertainment content too, customers who sign up for au Smart Pass, Video Pass or Uta Pass with a new contract (or resubscription) and who apply for the Student Discount during the campaign period will receive a discount equivalent to the monthly information charge for up to six months (until usage charges for July 2016).
Customers can also get special privileges for use in actual stores, such as invitations to events and live performances and various discounts.
