The 2026 FIFA World Cup is providing a great opportunity for not only Fox Sports and Telemundo to engage fans in compelling ways but also the likes of Comcast Xfinity. Today they took the wraps off of a number of initiatives designed to not only deliver the best picture and audio quality possible but also an enhanced Multiview, AI-powered FIFA World Cup highlights, Fan View, and much more.
For Vito Forlenza, VP of Sports and Entertainment, Comcast, the effort begins with a corporate mantra that sports should be simple, fun, and enjoyable.
With everything from rights become more scattered to the changes in the regional sports networks, and the growth of streaming services as legit players in the sports distribution landscape fans increasingly are finding it hard to find what they want or to even know what events are going on at a given moment.
That confusing landscape offers an opportunity for Xfinity as it looks to help the sports fan find what they need.
Sports fans are some of our most valuable and dedicated customers, he says. When we spoke with them, the thing that resonated was, I struggle every night to find my teams.' They're asking, Is it on TV? Is it on a streaming service? What kind of hoops am I going to have to jump through tonight?
For Comcast Xfinity the 2026 FIFA World Cup is providing an important opportunity to help fans navigate those challenges. For example, Xfinity TV customers will be able to simply say World Cup or Copa Mundial into the Xfinity Voice Remote to launch the platform's World Soccer hub, an aggregated, bicultural tournament destination that brings all live and on-demand coverage from across networks and streaming services into one simple, seamless experience.
One such hoop? Finding the service that has the best audio and picture quality as, increasingly the best bet for the best bit rates is not via an over-the-air signal or over a traditional cable infrastructure but, rather, a streaming service. And for Xfinity closing that gap is a two-step process: first committing to delivering more content in 1080p but also adding more bits to upconvert it to 4K.
A 2026 FIFA World Cup hub will make it easy for Comcast Xfinity customers to find the content they want. We've upped a ton of our channels to 1080p because it's getting to the point where the TVs that customers are putting in their homes are so good, says Forlenza. You can now see a big difference between 720 and 1080p - especially on those big screens.
As for Xfinity's RealTime4K service, all 104 FIFA World Cup matches from Fox Sports, plus a match of the day from Telemundo Deportes will be upconverted to 4K with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio.
The bit rate is four times as high as our HD service coming into a customer's home, says Forlenza. Our engineers have told us from experimenting in the lab that it's not really discernible to the human eye after 30 megabits per second - and that's what we ramp up to.
Delivered to the home over Xfinity's superior network just seconds behind the action on the pitch, Xfinity says RealTime4K offers sharp contrasts, lifelike colors and richer images as the incoming content is encoded through Dolby Vision and an immersive multi-dimensional sound experience with Dolby Atmos.
For the Super Bowl and now for the World Cup, we're taking the feed directly from the source, eliminating compression steps in the deliver pipeline, says Forlenza of a process that adds about 17 seconds of delay, still faster than over-the-air, YouTube, and DirecTV. It is objectively the best way to watch sports. It gets delivered into customers' households faster than our competition. Nobody else is doing what we're doing on live.
And to ensure RealTime4K streaming is as smooth as possible Xfinity is launching smart-boost WiFi, a new feature that helps TV customers get the best connection for their X1 box with one click of the remote. Eligible Xfinity TV customers watching in RealTime4K will see a prompt on their X1 to enable smart-boost WiFi, ensuring a smooth, consistent connection. Forlenza says that any 4K content going forward will automatically be boosted.
Explains Kelly Wright, Comcast Xfinity, director, sports product strategy: When you're watching Real-Time 4K, you'll get a notification on your screen. If you hit OK, it will boost that device for the next five hours. When people are doing Teams calls or your son is gaming in the basement and your Wi-Fi gets congested, this is insurance to make sure the game you're watching doesn't get disrupted.
Most importantly, smart-boost WiFi will also be available for use across other streaming apps so that when a big fight or game is being streamed on Peacock, Netflix, or Prime fans can request a boost for a five-hour period.
Xfinity customers will also be able to make use of a Create Your Own Multiview service whereby they can watch up to four sports channels at once. And in a summer where there is not only the World Cup but also the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup, the MLB All-Star game, the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, F1, NASCAR, and the Open Championship there are plenty of reasons to want to fire up a Multiview.
Create Your Own Multiview lets you pick both what to watch and how to watch, explains Wright who was intimately involved in the design of the feature. You can choose up to four events - WNBA, MLB, soccer, F1 - and it will populate a grid. You can spotlight one game, move the audio between any of the four boxes, and rotate that spotlight.
Adds Forlenza: We have not seen in the marketplace where you can have the companion experience and the multiview up at the same time. While others may have one or the other, we're not seeing the ability to have both. But we own everything from the network to the devices to the UI.
