Star Times and Good TV calls for entries

The Producers are looking for writers and directors of 20 x 52 minute films. We will also produce 10 x 6 min webisodes, of each film. These films will be screened on Star Times SA, and the webisodes on the new VOD Mobile channel, Good TV, towards the end of 2016.

We are looking for a new generation of filmmakers. You can have just finished studying at a film school, or been working in the industry for a few years. We are looking for filmmakers with a unique cinematic voice . You should not have directed either a TV series, or a feature film before.

CONCEPT:

We will produce 20 films of 52 minutes in length. The films will be ultra low budget in nature and style, but we see this as an opportunity rather than a limitation. We see this project as a 1st Season.

We will utilize all the current available digital technology, which will be high quality but low cost. You can shoot on a cellphone if you wish.

We shall limit each production to a schedule as follows:

Writing and Development: 3 months

Pre-production: 4 weeks

Shoot: 1 week *

Picture Editing: 4 weeks

Sound Edit & Mix: 2 weeks

Each film will be limited to small crews (max 7 people), and cast (3 or 4 cast), locations and equipment. We are not looking for animation, science fiction (unless it can be done under these rules), current affairs or documentaries.

After completion of the writing phase, we shall ask each team of selected filmmakers to present their pre-production and shooting plan, and their creative ideas, in a one-on-one presentation. We encourage you to pitch with your creative teams attached - Heads of Department.

We will manage all of the post-production, through unified technology and facilities, so ensuring overall quality of all the films. We will be collaborating in partnership with AFDA as a transition into the profession, an opportunity for Alumni and Internship platform for Honours, and an assistant opportunity for the Higher Certificate programme. We shall work with AFDA on providing several interns and assistants from their 3rd and 4th years on each film.

New young directors and writers, DOPs and sound teams, art directors and cast will be favoured. We would prefer filmmakers under the age of 30 years.

We shall supervise the production of all 20 films.

We shall be looking for stories by filmmakers in and set in, the following countries, areas and regions:

Port Elizabeth @ East London / Eastern Cape: 2

Durban / KZN: 3

Johannesburg / Gauteng: 6

Cape Town: 4

Botswana: 3

Mauritius: 2

TOTAL: 20

CREATIVE:

We have a very broad and general approach to the themes. The themes that will bind the films together are:

1. Summer - LOVE

2. Autumn - MUSIC

3. Winter - FOOD

4. Spring - WOMEN

Each filmmaker will need to explore, in their own way, each of the above themes, in an entertaining and achievable manner.
