Sir Chris Hoy uses rickshaw to rescue Scotland s Sky Sports Living for Sport Student

Sky Academy Ambassador and Great Britain's most successful Olympian Sir Chris Hoy has presented Bo'ness Academy student Abbie McCallum with the Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year for Scotland award. The 18-year-old was surprised by Sir Chris on a rickshaw, during a staged roadside rescue after the school bus faked a mechanical failure.

When your coach breaks down at the start of a school trip, you can usually assume it's not going to be the best day out. However that theory was well and truly proven wrong on this occasion!

Sir Chris boarded the bus to present the Student of the Year award before taking a stunned Abbie on the rest of her journey via his rickshaw. The school's coach had been rigged with hidden cameras earlier that morning so the surprise presentation could be broadcast on Sky Sports News HQ. Watch the video on our Sky Academy website.

Abbie and her fellow Bo'ness Academy students thought they were on their way to Sky's Livingston offices for a Sky Academy experience day and were completely shocked to see the six-time Olympic gold medallist step aboard. But after the surprise visitor - and their bus made a miraculous recovery - they still got to attend Sky Academy Skills Studios, where they write, produce and direct their own sports news report before filming it alongside Sir Chris.

Abbie was chosen to take part in Sky Sports Living for Sport as a project leader to increase her self-confidence and encourage her school's participation in extra-curricular activities. As part of her project she inspired hundreds of fellow students to become more engaged and active at school, creating and running weekly dance classes, setting up a school sports day and visiting local primary schools to champion her dance council.

Sky Academy Ambassador Sir Chris Hoy said: Abbie's passion and dedication to her role as project leader in Bo'ness Academy's Sky Sports Living for Sport project is absolutely fantastic. Her ability to inspire and lead through Sky Sports Living for Sport has positively change the lives of many of her peers both in and out of the classroom. Bo'ness Academy should be very proud to have a student of Abbie's calibre.

When asked about Abbie's accolade, Bo'ness Academy teacher Jonny MacWhirter said: In all my years of teaching I have never met a pupil who is as dedicated and passionate as Abbie. Being involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport has changed Abbie's life and given her so many opportunities she wouldn't have had before. Abbie grabbed the Sky Sports Living for Sport project with both hands and made a positive impact to hundreds of pupils' lives in Bo'ness. If ever there was a story which highlights the power of sport it is this one.
