1. What are according to you the challenges of working with countries in Africa where the ARPU is low?
Monetisation of services and profitability are challenging for all operators worldwide and an even bigger challenge where a large part of the population has little disposable income. The main focus is to keep the capital expenditure as low as possible whilst still delivering a future proof platform and providing a roll out of services over time which can be monetised. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) project is a great illustration of Inview's capability in low ARPU countries, to partner with governments and Pay TV operators to enable long term economically viable new services.
2. Can you tell us more about your Nigerian project which also represents a low ARPU country?
The NBC project in Nigeria is very interesting as the NBC are creating a free to view platform to maximise the value of analogue switch off (ASO), to build the manufacturing and broadcasting industries in Nigeria. Our feature rich electronic programme guide (EPG), user interface (UI), advertising and value added services provide a compelling user experience from day one, without the expense of high end set-top boxes, helping to keep costs down for the consumer. Future services will include push VOD, IP VOD, an application library and a complete multiscreen offering.
3. What are the challenges that Nigeria is facing for its Digital Switchover and how is Inview helping the country to meet the June 2017 deadline?
One of the key factors for the NBC in selecting Inview was our operational expertise, which they recognised as being invaluable in making digital switchover (DSO) successful in Nigeria. We bring unique technical and
commercial know how that is vital in managing the significant challenges that come with deploying a nationwide digital TV platform. After being involved with all aspects of ASO in the UK and deploying software and services on 9 million STB's, Inview is able to provide guidance on what to do to successfully delivery ASO, and more importantly what not to do from its many lessons learned.
4. Can you elaborate on how Nigeria can monetize their set-top boxes (STBs)?
Our software platform facilitates the successful monetising of services via the STB to generate new revenues and create a return on investment over each set top box's lifetime. It includes advertising integrated directly into the EPG and UI. The advertising can be targeted by region, user profile or TV viewing and can be used to promote the best of Nigerian and international content. Our audience measurement system will increase the value of the Nigerian advertising market by providing accurate viewing data. The platform also enables the generation of additional revenues from broadcast based services including Push VOD, catch up TV and PVR services, enabled by using one of the 2 USB ports on the STB to add external memory. This provides local
content providers in Nollywood with a secure way to distribute their content over the broadcast network to build and protect the value of the Nollywood content industry. As the broadband infrastructure improves in Nigeria and consumer demands increase, boxes can become IP connected via 3G or wi-fi dongles using the 2nd USB port, to offer OTT connected services such as IP
VOD and social networking. The STB can also be used for the collection of local TV licenses that are otherwise difficult to collect, creating new sources of revenue that the NBC can re-invest in to the broadcast industry generating thousands of new jobs.
5. Apart from Nigeria, how is Inview activities going on the African continent?
We are in advanced discussions with a couple of large English speaking and also French speaking countries, and work-in-progress with several others. Duplicating similar systems with our partners and benefiting from our flexible cloud infrastructure enables us to also provide a cost effective solution to smaller African markets.
