BACKSEVILLE INTERNATIONAL SECURES INTERNATIONAL RIGHTS TO DOCUMENTARY FEATURE ANTHROPOCENEFROM AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARIANS JENNIFER BAICHWAL AND NICHOLAS DE PENCIER & ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER EDWARD BURTYNSKY
Sales of the film about the impact of humans on our planet to launch at Cannes
Montr al May 2, 2018 Seville International is pleased to announce it has secured international rights to ANTHROPOCENE and will launch sales of the documentary at Cannes.
The feature documentary, which is the third in a series about humanity's impact on the state, dynamics, and future of Earth, follows the research of an international body of scientists who are arguing that due to profound and lasting human changes to the planet, we have entered a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. As the follow up to Manufactured Landscapes (2006) and Watermark (2013), ANTHROPOCENE, now in post-production, will further drive awareness about the consequences of humanity's actions on the planet.
The film is co-directed by veteran documentarians Jennifer Baichwal (Long Time Running), Nicholas de Pencier (Black Code) and photographer Edward Burtynsky (Watermark). Baichwal and de Pencier have won numerous awards for their work including Best Canadian Feature at TIFF and an International Emmy. Their films have premiered and competed at Sundance, TIFF, Berlin and Hot Docs, among other festivals. De Pencier also serves as producer and Director of Photography for ANTHROPOCENE. Burtynsky is a world-renowned photographer whose work is in the collections of over 60 major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Tate Modern in London.
For years, we have worked together to capture the ever-evolving state of our planet and communicate our species' impact in the most visually compelling and immersive ways. Whether through a VR experience, a documentary film or a photography exhibit, the through-line lies in the storytelling, say co-directors Jennifer Baichwal, Nicholas de Pencier and Edward Burtynsky. From Manufactured Landscapes to Watermark and now finally with ANTHROPOCENE, we look forward to sharing all we have learned from travelling the earth and witnessing the fact that the human signal is everywhere. We're excited to work alongside Anick and the team at Seville to share this project with the world.
From concrete seawalls in China that now cover 60% of the mainland coast, to the biggest terrestrial machines ever built in Germany, to psychedelic potash mines in Russia's Ural Mountains, to festivals celebrating metals in the closed city of Norilsk in Siberia, to the devastated Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and surreal lithium evaporation ponds in the Atacama desert in Chile, the filmmakers have traversed the globe to document evidence and experience of human planetary domination.
Jennifer, Nicholas and Edward are revolutionary artists and storytellers. They have created a fully immersive experience across many different mediums film, photography, art that is not only captivating, but also deeply concerning, says Anick Poirier, SVP of Sales, Seville International. ANTHROPOCENE is the third in a series of high-quality, impactful documentaries that leave you questioning your own role in our planet's destiny. We are looking forward to celebrating this documentary and sharing it with the international community.
The documentary is part of a multidisciplinary project that includes a museum exhibition premiering simultaneously at the Art Gallery of Ontario and National Gallery of Canada on September 28, 2018, before travelling to Manifattura di Arti, Sperimentazione e Tecnologia (MAST), in Bologna in Spring 2019.
The deal was negotiated by Poirier for Seville International and de Pencier on behalf of the film.
