Sorti fin 2021 Le dernier duel de Ridley Scott est une r ussite cin matographie incontest e. Pour cette pop e m di vale aux partis pris visuels tr s forts, le r alisateur britannique aura choisi de tourner six semaines en France, pr c d es dun long travail de pr paration en Irlande sur maquettes. Travailler aupr s de Ridley Scott, cest un r ve denfance , explique St phane Bourgoin. La d couverte de Blade Runner 10 ans, avec mon p re, ma donn envie de faire du cin ma. 35 ans apr s, jai eu un plaisir norme de me retrouver sous une tente avec Ridley Scott et son directeur de la photographie, Dariusz Wolski, construire la lumi re du Dernier Duel . Javais le sourire tous les jours en allant sur le plateau.
Installation de cinq ARRIMAX 18kW sur le tournage de The Last Duel de Ridley Scott
Un tournage avec Ridley Scott, cest une quipe de 600 personnes , souligne St phane Bourgoin. Cest une autre chelle par rapport au cin ma fran ais. Dans les int rieurs, il tourne chaque plan avec 4 cam ras en m me temps. Cela am ne une continuit , une fluidit ses films. Du coup, une s quence peut aller tr s vite tourner. Pour l quipe lumi re, les 4 cam ras, cest une grande contrainte. Il faut trouver des solutions d clairage qui conviennent sans prendre trop de place sur le plateau. Car nous tions toujours en d cor naturel. Le chef op rateur cr ait des directions de lumi re par zone avec des taches de lumi re. Il y en a une qui va chercher un visage, lautre un plan plus large... Comme les cam ras sont intelligemment plac es, tous les plans sont beaux. Et il faut voir la rapidit avec laquelle Ridley Scott d cide des axes cam ra sur le plateau. Cest impressionnant.
Dans les ch teaux m di vaux, lid e n tait pas dinstaller des rigs partout pour tout contr ler , insiste le chef lectro. Ridley Scott et Dariusz Wolski aiment laisser la place ce qui peut amener de la vie, comme un rayon de soleil qui entre dans une salle. ce moment-l , ils faisaient d placer tout le set pour en profiter. La base de l clairage tait des HMI ARRIMAX 18K que jinstallais sur des Manitou avec des cadres 6x6, pour clairer plus fort, plus loin, tout en tant doux. LARRIMAX est un outil parfait pour clairer de grandes surfaces. Dans les int rieurs, jai r alis quelques bo tes lumi re de 2x2m avec des SkyPanels. Nous avons aussi beaucoup travaill tous les effets feux, avec des reprises de rampes gaz qui nous permettaient dobtenir la petite brillance sur le visage. Car, m me si la tonalit g n rale du film est assez grise, la lumi re nest jamais plate. Il y a toujours une direction de lumi re, plus forte certains moments, moins dautres.
Avant dintervenir sur des productions am ricaines en tournage en France, St phane Bourgoin a eu un long parcours dans le cin ma fran ais. Depuis 2005, il a dirig l quipe lumi re sur des films remarqu s comme Holy Motors (Leos Carax) et Le myst re Henri Pick (R mi Bezan on).
Dix ARRIMAX 18 kW sur un tournage
Cest son travail sur la s rie Patriot (Amazon Prime Video) en 2017 qui lui ouvre les portes du cin ma am ricain. La saison 2 de Patriot a t enti rement tourn e Paris , explique le chef lectricien. Cest une s rie tr s haut de gamme, tourn e comme un long m trage, avec une image magnifique. Sur les productions am ricaines, il faut prendre tout le mat riel dont on a besoin, sans chercher optimiser comme on le ferait sur les films fran ais. On va vous reprocher de ne pas avoir pris assez de mat riel plut t que linverse.
Douze ARRIMAX 18kW sur le tournage de la s rie Patriot
Sur cette s rie, le DOP James Whitaker cherchait un contr le absolu de la lumi re. En plein jour, il fallait construire d normes bo tes noires de 6x6m pour faire du n gatif et cr er un d grad sombre sur le visage du personnage principal. En int rieur, le plus gros d cor tait le Palais Brongniart (ex-Bourse de Paris) avec ses arches normes, qui avait t transform en banque. Derri re les fen tres, jai install vingt ARRIMAX 18K, dont le faisceau devait tre r gl en inclinaison au degr pr s. cela sajoutaient des SkyPanels la face sur des 12x12 en Ultrabounce pour donner du model . Limage de la s rie a t tr s remarqu e aux Etats-Unis. Elle ma donn la cr dibilit pour travailler sur dautres productions am ricaines, comme Emily in Paris .

Sign e par Darren Star, le cr ateur de Sex and the City , Emily in Paris aura connu en 2020 un hit plan taire, devenant le plus gros succ s de Netflix pour une com die. Situ dans un Paris glamour, Emily in Paris fait la part belle aux v tements de cr ateurs qui sont la vraie star de la s rie avec Lily Collins. Je suis intervenu sur les Saisons 1 & 2 aux c t s du directeur de la photographie Steven Fierberg , explique le chef lectro. Nous avons travaill tr s troitement ensemble. Il ma tr s vite fait confiance. Sa ligne directrice tait dobtenir une image jolie, glossy, mais en m me temps douce. Dans le grand d cor de lagence, construit La Cit du cin ma, nous avons utilis des projecteurs tungst ne ARRI STUDIO T12 pour faire les entrants de soleil et obtenir cette teinte chaude.
