Sobatech Group Takes Its Production Model Remote with Blackmagic Design

Multi output production supports localized feeds for broadcasters across Europe and beyond.

Blackmagic Design today announced that Sobatech Group is producing live coverage of the F4 Spanish Championship and Eurocup-3 using a remote production workflow built around Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2 cameras and the ATEM 4 M/E Constellation 4K live production switcher.

Produced on behalf of the promoter and media rights holder EPIC Championships, both series take place at circuits in Spain and throughout Europe, with The Kilite Agency overseeing marketing services and commissioning Sobatech to handle production and distribution.

Instead of sending an entire crew to each circuit, Sobatech has centralized operations at its hub in Banyoles, reducing the crew and equipment required at each circuit. We only send camera operators, a technician and producer to a circuit, explained Xavier Soler, founder and CEO of Sobatech. This reduces our logistical footprint and production costs by 30 percent in Spain and up to 60 percent in the rest of Europe.

Race days can last up to 10 consecutive hours, making reliable transmission between the circuit and Banyoles essential. We needed reliable transmission between the track and control room, alongside a flexible setup capable of handling and synchronizing around 34 inputs without external converters, continued Soler.

The production also had to support a multi output workflow, tailoring each feed to the specific editorial needs of each broadcaster, he added.

Fourteen URSA Broadcast G2 cameras are positioned around each circuit, covering up to seven kilometers of track, including straights, turns, passing zones, starts and the pit lane.

Each camera is connected to a 4G router that establishes a VPN with Banyoles, enabling remote camera control, tally and lens control. The return feed allows operators to monitor the program output, although with about 1.5 seconds of latency, they are required to anticipate the action and make decisions independently, observed Soler.

The camera feeds are encoded in H.265 and transmitted via contribution systems based on the Haivision SST protocol, aggregating 4G and 5G connections from multiple carriers, along with Starlink, to maintain a resilient link to the remote production hub.

At the heart of the workflow, an ATEM 4 M/E Constellation 4K, with an ATEM 2 M/E Advanced Panel 40 for hardware control, manages cameras, graphics, replays, playout and backgrounds. Three Blackmagic Videohub 40 40 12G routers handle signal distribution and recording.

We can generate multiviews, handle signals with different frame rates, and synchronize them when necessary, reducing the need for external conversions, hardware and cabling, he noted.

Graphics are generated by onsite servers controlled remotely from Madrid, with two fill and key pairs fed into the vision mixer.

A full graphics feed is distributed to DAZN Portugal, REDTV in the United States and Canada, YouTube, Twitch, and destinations in South America, while the clean feed is recorded for archive and social media content. For DAZN Spain and DAZN UK, Sobatech creates dedicated unilateral feeds in two additional control rooms, adding local commentary, commentator footage and pit lane interviews to the main interview.

Using the HyperDeck Extreme 8K HDR broadcast deck's four channel recording capability, one unit simultaneously captures the wall feed, clean feed, and English and Spanish versions. A second records an H.265 version of the clean feed for external editors, with recordings written directly to a Blackmagic Cloud Store Max 24TB network storage solution, so files can be accessed while recording is still in progress.
