Going remote: redefining what post production looks like with Blackmagic Design.
Founded five years ago, the remote post production house Secret Weapon Post has grown to include a roster of more than 1,100 post professionals and has changed the post process for many feature films, documentaries and television series, bringing them into a new world of remote post production.
At the core of its workflow sits DaVinci Resolve Studio editing, photo editing, color grading, visual effects (VFX) and audio post production software, Blackmagic Cloud, and Blackmagic Cloud Store network storage solutions.
Blackmagic Design asked the Secret Weapon Post team about the evolving post production landscape and the emerging role that remote collaboration is playing on large productions.
How do you feel the post industry has evolved over the past decade and what's the current role of remote collaboration? Head of Workflow Candice Mars Williamson, CSI: The world is remote. That's the reality we've been inching toward for the last decade plus. I'm an introvert, so remote work doesn't scare me, but what I miss is the collaboration that existed predigital. I want to facilitate that collaborative work in conjunction with these new technologies in a way that doesn't minimize or sacrifice creativity. I don't want efficiency for the sake of efficiency. No matter how tech heavy our industry becomes, it is only a tool to tell stories. Profit savings are important, but the more we can recenter the creativity part of post, the better. More time to make stuff!
Founder and CEO Greg Olliver: Post has moved out of the post house and into the home office. Editing, assistant editing, color, sound, VFX, all of it is being done at home. Talent can be found in New York City to Los Angeles to Wichita to Berlin to Sydney and everywhere in between. During the pandemic, all that talent embraced technology and found that working at home saves time, and producers found it saves everyone cash. The right technology can connect everyone as if they are working together in the same room at the same time. DaVinci Resolve does just that.
What challenges are Secret Weapon Post looking to help solve? Olliver: Secret Weapon Studios and Secret Weapon Post was born five years ago as a film tech startup that uses technology to solve problems for filmmakers. Filmmaking is literally problem solving, with a thousand problems to solve before your creative team is allowed to be creative. I know this firsthand as a filmmaker who has written, shot, produced, directed and even done my own DVD art for some films, and it's ridiculous how much time I've spent solving problems instead of being creative.
So, at Secret Weapon Post we're using technology to chip away at the time and money spent on those problems. We do that by creating an umbrella for existing technology to work under our own technology, from budgeting to vetting crew to collaborating on post. One of the first problematic phases of filmmaking we wanted to tackle was post production since so much time and cash can be wasted there.
As a freelance filmmaker for more than 30 years, I wanted to make sure that we created a home for the global community of filmmaking talent and that it was free for them to use. We have taught people how to use the software, the hardware and provided media management. We've also vetted them.
Someone hiring for a job might not know if talent with a blockbuster film on their resume worked for one day or the entire show. Maybe they got fired on day two! So, we are working to vet any talent coming into our community and allowing producers to vouch for their favorite crew, so folks hiring know who to trust the same way someone might ask me, as an experienced filmmaker, for a recommendation. That idea grew pretty quickly with the post work we were bringing in, and now we have 1,100 folks all over the world ready to work, with hundreds of DaVinci Resolve savvy talent.
Williamson: Secret Weapon stands to help further bridge the gap between old school collaboration and emerging tech. There are heaps of things that work well about the way creatives communicate from on set to finishing, and we don't want to lose the throughline that travels with that. That's the backbone of great content no matter how much tech gets thrown at it. We want to preserve that as much as possible.
Our challenge is always the well this is the way we've always done it crowd. As someone who personally doesn't like a lot of change, I totally get relying on traditional workflows, but there is also a level of gatekeeping involved that can make access challenging for independent budgets; and even bigger budget projects for that matter. And even though the adage is that success is a combination of hard work and luck, I'd say one of the biggest factors is actually accessibility. That's what Secret Weapon is trying to foster: more accessibility.
What's your workflow and approach for each project? Williamson: It depends on the project's specific needs. This is the benefit of a bespoke approach. For some projects, we simply provide access to our 1,100+ vetted roster of DaVinci Resolve users. On a larger scale, it can look like us housing the RAW rushes and providing proxy syncs for your post team and then either grading in house and delivering for you or syncing RAW rushes for the finishing team so you can handle finishing. You can use us as much or as little as your project needs.
Head of Post Beau Genot: This approach enables productions to hire the best person possible as opposed to the best people available in the area. For better or worse, post no longer needs to be Los Angeles or Ne
