Registration is open for the Johannesburg 48 Hour Film Project 2019

The concept of the project is for teams of Film Makers across Gauteng to make a short film of between 4 to 7 minutes, from start to finish, within a 48-hour timespan. At kickoff, teams draw a genre out of a hat, and are given a character name, profession, a line of dialogue and prop, all to be included in their film.

This timed short-film competition has proven to be a favourite with students, professionals and film enthusiasts keen to make a film. We have teams entering for company team building, community development, family bonding, and just to have fun.

Local screenings take place from 25 to 29 August at Cine 1, Ster-Kinekor, Mall of Africa, and the local Awards will be held on Saturday, 31 August 2019.

This is Jozis 9th year running. In 2018 there were 80 teams registered, with 60 teams officially entered, and 20 not being able to raise funds to enter. We hope to afford more teams the opportunity to enter this year by raising funds to cover entries. There was over 1,000 individuals participating in the competition. More than 50% were newcomers and more than 60% were black filmmakers, many from townships.

The 48 Hour Film Project offers a free workshop to entered teams on Sunday 4 August, which focuses on writing, producing and Surviving the 48HFP.
