Hollywood formally kicked off the race to the all-important Academy Awards with the announcement of the 2023 Oscar nominees on Tuesday afternoon 24 February. The surreal sci-fi film Everything Everywhere All At Once topped the list with 11 nominations.

--

The film, which also features Jamie Lee Curtis, earned four acting nominations for its cast, including best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan who appeared as a child in Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom almost four decades ago and best lead actress for Michelle Yeoh.

While she is a seven-time Grammy winner, Rihanna got her first Oscar nomination for her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever song Lift Me Up.

Lady Gaga, who is no stranger to the Oscars, received a nod for her Top Gun: Maverick anthem , Hold My Hand. We will have to wait and see whether the power ballad will follow in the steps of Shallow with Bradley Cooper from the 2018 movie A Star Is Born and become Gaga's next Academy Award win.

RELATED CONTENT Surprise Taylor Swift snub The absence of Grammy-winning artist Taylor Swift however came as a surprise to many.

According to Forbes, the American singer-songwriter was touted by many to feature among the five nominees for her song Carolina from the soundtrack of the murder mystery film Where The Crawdads Sing.

Indie pop rock singer-songwriter Mitski rocked the boat with This is a Life from the multiverse epic Everything Everywhere All at Once. The first-time nominee crafted the song alongside two-time nominee this year Ryan Lott (who is a member of the group Son Lux, which is up for Best Original Score for the same film) and previous winner and music veteran David Byrne, according to EW.

Mitski (Ebru Yildiz) and music stalwart David Byrne have earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for This is a Life'. The song took home the prize in the same category at the Golden Globes earlier this month.
