Kuala Lumpur, 12th November 2015 What is beauty? In its 18th year, and at a time when society's perception of beauty is diverse, Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant (MACIP) 2015 establishes that beauty comprises three key attributes Intelligence, Appearance and Personality.
Janice Choong Soo Meen from Selangor proved herself worthy of being crowned Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant 2015, by outshining nine other beautiful hopefuls at the finals held at Mega Star Arena, Kuala Lumpur last Sunday.
It was a double win for the 24-year-old model that stands at 172cm height to also clinch the Miss Body Beautiful subsidiary award, bagging prizes worth a total of RM204,335 including a Mazda 3 car and RM31,000 cash.
Although contented with her overall performance, Janice said the coveted title was a surprise win for her, which she attributed to the unwavering support from her parents and friends.
In the last repartee round of the competition, she impressed the judging panel with her confidence, when asked what is most beautiful about her. That'd be my smile. A woman is most beautiful when she smiles. Even an 80-year-old toothless lady would still look lovely in her smiling face, she said while beaming her heart-melting smile at the audience.
On her mission to represent Malaysia in the forthcoming Miss Chinese International Pageant in Hong Kong, Janice committed, I will gear up for the competition by continue enhancing my verbal eloquence to build-up my self-confidence.
The overwhelming favourite amongst the finalists, Johorean Kathryn Gwee Sin Yi, 25, finished as first runner-up besides grabbing the title of Miss Photogenic, whereas Selangor-born Tan Suk Nee, 21, won second runner-up.
Kathryn was an early favorite but midway through the competition, Janice gained a competitive edge which led her to the crown. However Kathryn only has praises for her contender saying that, Janice guided me patiently with her modeling experience when we were in catwalk classes. Such a kind and pretty girl is deserving of the title .
Suk Nee is currently pursuing a degree in International Business and she's genuinely glad to make it to the top three and looking forward to the next beautiful chapter in life.
The three standouts from one of the most prestigious beauty pageants in Malaysia aspire to embark on a journey of discovering, learning and growing in the showbiz.
On the other hand, the fourth and fifth spots were claimed by Yuth Gan Yin Zhi (22, Selangor) and Lim Siok Yee (23, Kedah) respectively. Despite unable to make it into the top five, Jany Lee Sing Yi (22, Selangor) who gained the highest popularity votes among all, took home the voters' choice title Miss Gorgeous.
Other finalists include Tebby Tun Chee Yan (20, Selangor), Gisele Lee Yu Ping (22, Perak), Jane Tan Yee Ching (23, Kuala Lumpur) and Winnie Yip Wai Kuan (20, Perak).
This year, the finale of MACIP was co-hosted by pageant alumni Vivienne Oon and MY FM radio announcer Royce Tan. The judging panel was made up of six members from various professional aspects, including TV and radio personality Angel Wong and Jack Lim, former model-turned-businesswoman Soong Ai Ling, international top model Amber Chia, international fashion designer Khoon Hooi, and Founder and CEO of Adonis Investment Holdings Ann Lee.
Started off the show, the ten versatile finalists impressed the audience and the judges with their brilliantly nuanced talent showcase. Next, the swimming-suit Q&A session saw the beauties demonstrating their intelligence and eloquence before the emergence of top five.
Dolled up in elegant cheongsams, the top five finalists then exuded their charisma as each of them took on 60-second repartee with Jack Lim who is best known for his quick wit and humour. This brought the event to the pinnacle of the night when the deserving beauty queen was crowned.
Adding the glamour and glitz of the pageant were performances by Astro Star Quest 2014's champion Uriah See and 2015's first runner up Daniel Sher. To top it off, Josh Kua, violinist and model from Melbourne delivered on his crowd-pleasing medley performance.
MACIP 2015 was sponsored by Adonis, co-sponsored by SHEEN and MY FM as the official radio. Catch the encore broadcast of the finals on Astro Wah Lai Toi (Ch 311 & HD Ch 310) on 14 November 2015, 11am and 10.30pm, or via On Demand (OD) and Astro on the Go.
