NHK to demo 8K wirele first

Japanese public broadcaster NHK is planning to show an 8K video transmission over a single 6MHz UHF TV channel at NAB.

The demonstration will be the first time anywhere outside Japan that wireless transmission of 8K Super Hi-Vision has been shown.

NHK is also set to present detailed results of a long-distance, single-channel, over-the-air 8K test broadcast it recently conducted in Japan.

A presentation theatre featuring a 350-inch screen will display fresh Super Hi-Vision content, including highlights from the Sochi Winter Olympic Games, with 8K video projection and full 22.2-channel sound reproduction.

It says that progress in the increasing practicality of Super Hi-Vision systems will also be shown, including an 8K video camera weighing less than 4.5lbs (about 2kg), and a first 8K-capable realtime HEVC encoder.

The broadcaster has also designed a display with an integrated 22.2-channel sound system for domestic use to help persuade the public that this large-scale immersive audio-visual hardware is what they need in their homes by 2020, the year of the Tokyo Olympic Games.

In January the broadcaster's Science & Technology Research Labs conducted the 8K Ultra HD single-channel test from its bureau in Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, southern Japan, to a receiving station 27km away.
