Story Highlights
As technology advances at a breakneck pace, sports media organizations are constantly trying to keep up with an ever-evolving workflow ecosystem, especially as it pertains to storing, securing, and monetizing valuable active content archives. New content is created by the truck loads each day but how do media organizations simply get more out of the content they already own?
Workflow solutions built around artificial intelligence are changing the game. This summer, Perifery, a division of DataCore, launched AI 2.0, an AI-powered solution suite that unlocks monetization opportunities using AI-generated enriched metadata and automating distribution workflows.
SVG sat down with Abhijit Dey, GM and Chief Operating Officer at Perifery to discuss the growing use of AI in metadata and advanced search, asset security, the latest highlights in the company's portfolio, and more.
Abhijit Dey, GM and Chief Operating Officer, Perifery
For those that aren't familiar, can you tell us a bit about Perifery, the company's history, and your product portfolio?
Perifery aims to solve fundamental challenges within the Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry by providing resilient storage infrastructure for media assets and enabling media workflows through industry-leading AI solutions.
Perifery was initiated as a Business Unit within DataCore, which is our parent company focused on horizontal IT solutions, with the intent of focusing narrowly on M&E. In 2022, Perifery acquired media storage company Object Matrix, and in 2023 it acquired media AI workflow company WIN. The goal here was to accelerate our technology portfolio and go-to-market execution in alignment with our vision and mission to focus on solutions for M&E.
The Perifery solution-centric portfolio focuses on broadcast and post production media, sports, gaming, and house of worship use cases, basing solutions on object storage platforms (Perifery Swarm and Perifery Object Matrix) and AI-based workflow solutions (known as Perifery AI ).
In your view, what makes the sports-media market unique? And how is Perifery uniquely equipped to serve this market?
The sports-media market is growing rapidly, but businesses are not always able to match the pace. The volume of recorded footage can sometimes be overwhelming, making it challenging to locate specific assets when needed. Too many systems have become polluted with meaningless asset tags (metadata) added with AI products that don't quite have an understanding of content. Our focus on metadata and advanced search is unmatched in the industry. The solution for the sports-media market is high-quality, meaningful metadata (which Perifery AI assigns to each and every asset) with software that understands the relevant context as well as the content. This complements the already advanced metadata capabilities of Perifery object-based storage platforms.
What kind of cyber resilient storage does Perifery offer and what makes it attractive to the sports market?
Perifery offers two highly cyber resilient object-based storage platforms: Swarm and Object Matrix. While the two products don't have the exact same features, they both bring the benefits inherent in a well-executed object-based software-defined storage solution. Our expert solution architects are available to help guide customers to whichever storage platform is the best fit for them. From the perspective of those in the sports market, the factors that make Perifery storage attractive is the ability to scale effortlessly, knowing that their media assets are secure and retrievable from nearline (Object Matrix) or active (Swarm) archive. We make it simple for our customers to re-use and monetize assets to further their mission and create new streams of income.
How is Perifery approaching the rise of AI? And how is Perifery AI helping content creators grow audience?
We are approaching the rise of AI with a narrow problem-solving approach that includes augmenting metadata or descriptors of the asset through Generative AI; solving workflow challenges in sports video transcription, facial or player recognition, and predictive analytics using new and old content; and providing an intuitive media end-user experience in post-production, broadcast, and distribution.
We are helping content creators grow their audience by making content easier to find and more accessible. This means they can easily find and re-use content to provide historical context as well as replay contemporary assets.
As sports-production workflows continue to evolve, what kind of mobility of content archives at the edge does Perifery bring?
Perifery Single Node Swarm (SNS) is a compact, secure vault for media assets so you can securely enhance, store, and stream from wherever you need, including the edge. For any organization creating, preserving or using media assets-particularly those in sports and gaming-the benefits of edge computing can simplify their mission and make a monumental impact on their organization's effectiveness.
Benefits include integration with S3-compliant MAMs and post-production tools; simplifies administration, lowers cost of acquisition and operation (TCA & TCO); acceleration of content creation with immediate access to assets and workflows; analysis of data for critical, localized decision-making and actionable insights; massive scale with maximum reliability, flexibility, and compactness; preservation of a media asset workflow repository under 100-TB space for creation; and dynamic enrichment of metadata and content awar
