ZEI Dialyt 8 x 56 B/GA T*: the End of an Era

After 55 years and around 250,000 sold models, ZEISS is now discontinuing the production of one of its binoculars: the ZEISS Dialyt 8 x 56 B/GA T* will increasingly disappear from the market. A last numbered edition limited to 250 models of these classic binoculars was presented at the IWA 2016 trade fair in the German city of Nuremberg and will be available from specialist retailers from the middle of the year onwards.

"No binoculars have shaped the face of hunting over decades more than the ZEISS Dialyt 8 x 56 B/GA T*," says Walter Schwab of the ZEISS Training Academy in the Sports Optics business unit. "Hunting is steeped in tradition, but it must also go with the times. The transmission, sealing and field of view of the successors the modern, high-performance ZEISS VICTORY HT and ZEISS VICTORY SF binocular lines clearly surpass those of the classic binoculars."

The story of ZEISS Dialyt

The magnification and lens diameter of the ZEISS Dialyt became the benchmarks for twilight binoculars. The Dialyt models offered an unprecedented bright image and perfect ease of use thanks to their slim design. At the end of the 1960s the binoculars were given the "ZEISS" brand name and their typical rubber eyecups. In the mid-1980s their high image definition was further increased by the P phase coating which corrected an aberration typical of all roof prism systems. A further outstanding feature introduced soon afterwards was the T* multi-coating which set the binoculars far apart from their rivals on the market.

Since this time, the binoculars have been produced practically unchanged in Wetzlar and have continued their success on the market despite many technical innovations. "This era is now coming to an end. However, with our new and more powerful binoculars we can look to the future with optimism," says Schwab.

Consumer Optics

The Consumer Optics business group combines the companys business with camera and movie lenses, binoculars, spotting scopes, hunting optics and planetarium technology. It is represented at the Oberkochen, Wetzlar and Jena sites. The business group is allocated to the Vision Care/Consumer Optics segment. In fiscal year 2014/15 the segment generated revenue of 1.007 billion with around 9,100 employees.
