Nevion keeps local government and communities connected

A Flashlink optical fiber transport solution by Nevion, award-winning provider of virtual media production infrastructure, has been installed at Loudon County Government (LCG) in the US state of Virginia for its live cable and web broadcasts.

LCG televises its key Board of Supervisors business meetings and public hearings to ensure the local community is kept fully informed of all relevant government issues. When it came to covering the full schedule of government meetings, LCG wanted the ability to broadcast from two rooms simultaneously to ensure the maximum output for its regional audience.

LCG needed to integrate its existing professional broadcast production system, located in the main boardroom of its administration building, with a brand new media facility and control room installed in a secondary boardroom area, which was situated 325 feet (100 meters) away at the opposite side of the building.

Digital Video Group (DVG), specialists in the design, sales and installation of broadcast production and high-end audio/visual equipment and systems, were responsible for sourcing the Nevion solution capable of interconnecting the new secondary boardroom space with the main boardrooms control room for primary production purposes.

DVG selected two Nevion Flashlink Compact frames, ideal for transporting multiple SD/HD/3G-SDI signals in-house. The solution supports up to 18 signals in each direction, using dual channel SFP receivers and transmitters along with Nevions Multicon N-BOX controller, and is designed for standalone applications.

As part of the install, the core system equipment and racks on the main boardroom side of the building were moved into the new, dedicated equipment room, which was located next to the Cable head-ends and web-encoders.

Ryan Boze, sales representative, DVG said: LCG wanted to integrate a high quality solution that would be the same as those used by major broadcasters, but still affordable and cost effective enough to suit a smaller facility. We calculated that around 16 signals needed to go both ways between the new core location and the original main boardroom control room. There were only seven fibers, four copper SDI cables, and four Cat5e cables between these two locations so we wanted to utilize a CWDM solution over the existing fiber to handle the transport of these signals.

Boze said: We selected this solution largely because of the physical footprint of the solution in comparison to the density of the I/O - it fitted the bill financially and offers the highest level of reliability which was a fundamental requirement for the broadcast facility. Nevion offers very high quality products for these types of behind the scenes infrastructure tasks that hardly get recognized, yet do the heavy lifting. The company offers this at excellent value and it allows me to provide my customers with solutions to problems they believe they cannot afford.
