IABM, BBC and BT Sustainability event report - 11 February 2016 Nigel Burtt, IABM Technology Consultant

The original project partners, BBC, BT and IABM with facilitators Forum for the Future, published the first stage report in June 2015 and wanted to bring in more stakeholders to take the project forward.

Attending the first meeting in 2016, were representatives from BBC, BT, IABM, ITV, Albert Project, Sky, EMC, Carbon Trust, Virgin Media, Huawei, Sony, Arqiva, Ericsson and TechUK.

Hattie Park, the Environmental Sustainability Project Manager from the BBC Policy and Strategy team opened the meeting and explained that it is hoped to run a further three meetings in 2016 to explore the next steps. A number of good contributions were made around the table as part of an introductory discussion, focussing on the need to share examples of initiative already in play, to learn from each other and to make intelligent, informed decisions that work for the entire industry. Renaud Di Francesco from Sony Europe made the important point that the concept of sustainability for the environment needs to take account of the impact on people just as much as the impact on the planet, and so there should always be a strong ethical background to the decisions taken.

Hattie then introduced Hugh Jones, the Managing Director of the Advisory team at The Carbon Trust. Hugh gave a presentation (available below) on the recent United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP21) held in Paris. Hugh said that the active engagement of China this time was significant in the decision making at COP21. Their involvement encouraged the commitment of other nations who had previously been somewhat reluctant or reticent such as Russia, Australia and Canada.

After the presentations, there was a wide ranging discussion on the matters arising and on where the project should go next. There was a general feeling that we need to encourage some more stakeholders to engage by showing them that adopting aspects of sustainability is not something they should feel coerced into and worry about the costs of doing so, but rather that they should feel that they would actively participate in something which adds long term business value. A consensus view seemed to be that we should look at case studies or examples of successful schemes already existing or in progress to see if these offer lessons which can be extrapolated to other areas in the L2S project arena. Certainly, it seemed that the Albert project could be one such scheme and there was support from many around the table that this would be a good topic for discussion at the next meeting, currently proposed to be at the BT Tower, in London, in the morning of Wednesday May 4th 2016.
