New 4K 60p cameras from Panasonic, more support for the UHD Alliance's Filmmaker mode and an updated version of Dolby Vision were among the key talking points at day one of CES.
Panasonic described its new 4K 60p camcorders as three of the industry's smallest and lightest. The HC-X1500, HC-X2000 and AG-CX10 include Two Manual Rings, an ND Filter, a Built-in LED Video Light*3, and 24-bit High Resolution Linear PCM Audio Recording. For video recording, the models support 4:2:2 10bit Internal Recording*4 and HEVC codec. Various recording formats can also be selected, and built-in Wi-Fi supports HD Live Streaming using just the camcorder.
Panasonic CX10 X2000 The UHD Alliance announced the Directors Guild of America, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and the International Cinematographers Guild have all confirmed support for its Filmmaker Mode which brings a more cinematic viewing experience to home entertainment by turning off motion smoothing on TVs, among other setting adjustments.
Samsung, Philips and Kaleidoscope have all announced support for the initiative, joining LG Electronics, Panasonic and Vizio, which announced support for the programme in August.
Meanwhile, Dolby plans to go Beyond HDR with an update to Dolby Vision.
Dolby Vision IQ uses Dolby Vision dynamic metadata and light sensors inside the TV to deliver a perfect picture in your room at every moment , optimising the HDR picture based on the content and ambient light conditions in the room where the viewer is. The idea is that if a viewer changes from watching bright live sport, to a darker TV series, the TV will adjust accordingly for the optimum picture.
Sony unveiled its own new technology, Ambient Optimisation, for its TV sets. The technology optimises picture and sound quality in any customer environment. Acoustic Auto Calibration detects where the customer views their TV from during initial setup and calibrates sound quality based on the environment.
HDR10+ Technologies, a joint venture between Samsung, 20th Century Fox and Panasonic, announced specification updates to accommodate DisplayPort and AV1. The Alliance for Open Media has published an Implementation Note for HDR10+ support with the AV1 encoding standard.
